New LUMINA Interface Greets Returning Students!
Shane Nackerud,
Libraries Web Coordinator
Just as students were finishing finals for
Spring Semester 2000, the University Libraries -- Twin Cities
launched a sneak preview of a new version of the Libraries' web
site, "LUMINA: The Digital Library Gateway." The
Libraries system wants to convey the message: "we’re BIG
and we’re here for you!" LUMINA is the jumping-off point to
learn about and use the hundreds of databases, thousands of online
resources, including MNCAT, the catalog of over 5 million books,
maps, slides, films and other materials owned by the Libraries.
The new version has been running all summer and is ready to
make your research process faster and simpler. User testing has
played a major part in the development of this site, and the
results have been very positive. We hope you will find the new
LUMINA a much improved and friendlier gateway to the Libraries'
resources and services. |

QuickStart
Research Quickstart connects students
to information resources in over 200 subjects. This wizard-like
tool generates dynamic Web pages that contain links to a variety
of information resources including periodical indexes, Web sites,
and writing guides. Resources are chosen by U of M librarians who
are specialists in the subject areas covered.
QuickStudy:
A Library Research Guide
QuickStudy offers students the help they need
to become effective researchers. QuickStudy is a Web-based
tutorial written by University of Minnesota librarians to guide
students through the process of conducting library research at the
U and on the Web. The QuickStudy menu includes modules on:
starting your research; designing a search strategy; finding
books; finding articles; finding web sites; finding facts, reviews
and more; evaluating sources; citing sources.
Both databases are great for beginning researchers, and
advanced researchers will appreciate the convenience of having all
the basic resources for a discipline listed and linked on a single
Research QuickStart page. Instructors find QuickStudy a useful
tool to orient their students to library research strategies.
