Finding Electronic Journals in MNCAT

http://www.lib.umn.edu/articles/ej.phtml
Sue Zuriff, Materials Acquisitions and Control

Electronic journals are a useful addition to our collections. They are totally accessible on-campus and from off-campus by University students, staff and faculty. Besides, there’s no worry about checked-out or otherwise unavailable volumes!

The University of Minnesota Libraries have been cataloging electronic journals for about four years; there are currently a little more than 3,000 e-journals in MNCAT, the University of Minnesota catalog. Most of them are cataloged to appear on the same record with the print version—a URL and an Internet resource location are added to the print record on MNCAT. Originally we created separate records for the online version. It soon became clear, though, that it’s much easier for patrons if the electronic access is on the same record as the print (The newest version of MNCAT (MnLink) is especially helpful in highlighting the electronic access.

Almost all e-journals at the University are received on the basis of a print subscription. Vendors provide the electronic access to a large collection of journals and after any access restrictions are worked out, the URL is added to the print record. The use of Visual BASIC macros has simplified adding the electronic access—hundreds can be done in a few hours versus the days and weeks it took to do manually.

Coverage of the electronic version may vary considerably from the print. For example, the JSTOR collection has no current issues; it has a "moving wall" of 4-5 years back. But it’s valuable because its coverage goes back to the first issue of long-running journals that may not be readily available in open stacks. Project Muse covers more recent issues, as do most other electronic collections, but does not include earlier issues. ( You may browse vendor lists at: http://www.lib.umn.edu/articles/vendors.phtml ) Generally, holdings (issues owned) for electronic journals are not listed in the MNCAT record; but the information on the available issues is only a click away.

To quickly find electronic journals in the online catalog, do a keyword search that includes the code ejour, which is added to every periodical that has electronic access. For instance, searching with a broad term, Find history and ejour as keyword, retrieves 108 titles; a search using a more specific term, Find medieval and ejour as keywords, retrieves four records.

Finding Full Text Articles

Susan Gangl, General Reference Services, Wilson Library

When you’re reading an article for your research, there’s nothing more convenient than having the full text of that article right on your computer screen. You can easily include accurate quotations in your research paper, and incorporate the exact citation into your footnotes and bibliography. That convenience is becoming increasingly available. LUMINA’s ArticleIndexes menu includes a listing of over 30 indexes that include at least some full-text articles as well as the listings (citations).

Full-text indexes are easy to spot on the other ArticleIndex menus, too. Just watch for the little scroll icon to the left of the index title. In the list at left they’re marked with this symbol: ►.

It’s important to remember, though, that if you are doing in-depth research, convenience isn’t everything! You may need a print-format index to locate all the relevant articles. If you need more information, use Research Guides at http://www.lib.umn.edu/research/  or ask a library staff member for suggestions.

Try These Popular Full Text Article Indexes

FirstSearch is the software that runs 16 fabulous databases* purchased by U of M Libraries for your use. Over the summer there have been important changes in FirstSearch databases. Full text of some articles is now available in those databases that index articles. The screens have also changed! You will now find a very "user friendly" screen for both basic and advanced searching. Both include an option to limit your search to full text.

For information on searching the new FirstSearch screens visit the "Using OCLC FirstSearch" section of the OCLC FirstSearch web site http://www.oclc.org/firstsearch/using/index.htm#searching  or use the Help feature in each database. Reference staff in all U of M libraries can also advise you about the best way to search these databases. Check out your favorite FirstSearch database and enjoy the improvements or, if new to the U, explore these files by choosing "Article Indexes" from the Libraries LUMINA screen (http://www.lib.umn.edu/) and select them using the alphabetical list.

*FirstSearch Databases: Applied Science and Technology, Art Abstracts, Biological And Agricultural Abstracts, Contemporary Women's Issues, EconLit, Education Abstracts, ERIC, General Science Abstracts, GeoBase, Humanities Abstracts, Library Literature, MLA Bibliography, PAIS International, RILM, Social Sciences Abstracts, and Sociological Abstracts.

InfoTrac is the software for several popular, interdisciplinary databases. Read articles from your favorite popular magazines using General Reference Center Gold. Find a great mix of popular and core scholarly journals in a wide range of subject areas, with Expanded Academic Index. Locate company information as well as business articles using General Business File. In addition to these ongoing subscriptions, InfoTrac OneFile is a new database that brings together many resources in one convenient file. InfoTrac Kids, Junior and Student editions provide information to the state’s youth; these are a terrific training resource for tomorrow’s teachers, our education majors.

LEXIS-NEXIS is the premier current news and law database system. The University Libraries subscribes to three Lexis-Nexis databases. Academic Universe provides news, business, legal, trade, medical and reference information. The news component offers articles full text from hundreds of newspapers appear online. Congressional Universe, with reports, testimonies, bills, laws and more. Statistical Universe offers not just the U.S. Statistical Abstracts of the U.S. but lets you search the abstracts and index to U.S. & state governments and privately published and international statistical sources (Statistical Universe is the online equivalent of three printed sources: American Statistics Index, Statistical Reference Index and Index to International Statistics).

National Newspapers includes five newspapers: Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Star Tribune, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post. To limit your search to one of these titles: Once inside the database (which also includes ABI Inform) click on National Newspapers, click continue, and do a "New Search for Publication" from the top banner.
