Transferring Books From Wilson Library to MLAC

The Wilson general stacks are currently close to 90% capacity. Standard library practice recommends an 85% capacity or less, to allow for growth and flexibility. We are currently adding approximately 500 new books to the collection per week, or 26,000 volumes per year.

Library staff and administration are proposing to move 150,000 volumes from Wilson Library to the nearby high density storage facility, the Minnesota Library Access Center (MLAC), to address this ongoing space problem.

This move, scheduled to occur over the next six months, is necessary to accommodate the predicted growth of the collection for the next five to six years. This is the second such move for Wilson. The first phase took place in 2002/03 when, after careful consultation with users, the Libraries transferred 160,000 books.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I review the list of proposed titles for transfer?

Yes. We have created a database of books proposed to be transferred.

How were the materials likely to be transferred selected?

A study was undertaken this summer to identify the most likely material to be transferred. The same criteria were used in 2002/03. The logical focus is on older, little used material. Each item identified has been in the collection for at least ten years and has not been checked out in the last ten years.

Items considered for transfer come from many subjects, with some exceptions for material known to be frequently browsed, reference materials, and collections of particular distinction.

Can I recommend that certain books stay at Wilson Library?

Absolutely. We welcome your suggestions and recommendations. Go to the database of books proposed to be transferred. Follow the directions for viewing the list. When you find a book you want to stay in Wilson let your subject librarian know. You can do this in one of two ways:

  1. Copy the citation from the webpage and paste it into an e-mail message.
  2. Print off the page of citations, highlight the citation for the item you want to leave at Wilson, and campus mail it to your subject librarian.

We welcome your input between now and the end of December 2007.

What is MLAC, and how does it work?

MLAC is a statewide facility for long-term storage of important but lesser-used items. It is located two blocks north of Wilson Library in the Elmer L. Andersen Library. Items in MLAC are shelved by size which allows for high-density storage. Each item is given a barcode which tells MLAC staff which shelving range and shelf the item can be found on.

Once materials are moved to MLAC how can they be retrieved?

We anticipate that the transfer of this material will cause little or no inconvenience to our users, based on our our experience with the first large move of material in 2002/03. There is a 24-hour turnaround time for paging material from MLAC and, as with other library material, delivery can be made directly to a campus office address or to the users' choice of University Library sites. http://www.lib.umn.edu/site/mlac-paging.phtml

Is there a way to virtually "browse" the materials since they cannot be physically browsed?

Yes. Do the following:

  1. From the library's main webpage select MNCAT Basic.
  2. From the MNCAT search screen select the "Browse" link at the top of the page.
  3. From the drop down menu select the type of browse you want (e.g. Dewey Call Number Begins With...").
  4. Type in your call number (e.g. 900.1) and you will receive a browseable list of all items with that call number.
  5. Click on one of the call numbers and you will be taken to the short bibliographic record with links to the previous and next records.

What if I need to browse large quantities of paged materials?

Space to review large quantities of materials from MLAC can be arranged at Wilson Library. Call: 624-0205
