- Information in parenthesis is the command search equivalent for MNCAT ( http://mncat.lib.umn.edu ) and is only for your information. This information does not need to be included when configuring Z39.50 clients for use of these search types.
- Valid search values are the standard MARC21 language codes (e.g. fre, ger, jpn, som, swe). A complete of language codes is available at the Library of Congress MARC standards website (http://www.loc.gov/marc/languages/lang_pt2.html ">http://www.loc.gov/marc/languages/lang_pt2.html).
- Valid search values for material type are MNCAT specific, though based on the draft U.S. z39.50 profile. The complete list of material type (wat=) values is available in the MNCAT Help (http://www.lib.umn.edu/catalogs/acls).
- Valid search values for date are years, e.g. 2002.
Client Software
Z39.50 client software may require additional configuration to enable searching on a given database. Technical details for searching and viewing records from this catalog are given above. The University Libraries is unable to provide technical support for the configuration and maintenance of external Z39.50 connections. However, we have developed basic configuration files for using two particular Z39.50 desktop clients, EndNote and ProCite, which should be useful for regular users of these programs.
EndNote
EndNote uses one configuration file with search settings for each library, this file is called a "connection file." A connection file has been created for access MNCAT using EndNote. To retrieve this connection file, click on the link for the file: UMCatalog EndNote Connection File (updated February 2003). Save the file into your EndNote Connections folder (usually found in your C:\Program Files\EndNote directory). Users of EndNote on Macintosh computers will need to configure their browser (based on the browser) to recognize this UMCatalog.enz file as an EndNote connection file.
The University of Minnesota call number is not retrieved when using EndNote in this way. Any call numbers that are retrieved should be ignored.
ProCite
ProCite has a single host configuration file for all libraries, called BkwrAPI.z39. A version of this file with updated University of Minnesota setting is available here to download. However, if you have edited your host configuration file you may want to manually update the University of Minnesota host configuration so that you do not lose your other configuration information. If you want to use the connection file here, first back-up your current BkwrAPI.z39 file (usually found in your C:\ Program Files\Procite\BkwrAPI directory) by either renaming the file (to something like BkwrAPIz39.old) or copying to a different location. Then click on this link for the file: BkwrAPI.z39. Save the file into the same ...\Procite\BkwrAPI directory. This particular BkwrAPI.z39 file was created and tested using ProCite5.
The University of Minnesota call number is not retrieved when using ProCite, at this time. Any call numbers that are retrieved should be ignored. However, ProCite has a configuration file (usmarc.cfg) that maps information from library catalogs into appropriate fields in ProCite. A version of this file is being modified to put the University of Minnesota call number and library location into the ProCite call numbers field (44). As soon as that file is available we will update this document and make the file available to you.
Unicode (character set/font for different languages) support and Z39.50 Clients:
The University of Minnesota library records are stored in the Unicode character set. However, most Z39.50 clients cannot display Unicode characters. For this reason, the records sent to Z39.50 clients are "downgraded" so they can be displayed by non-Unicode character sets. Unicode diacritics, depending on your Z39.50 client, will either not show, or they will be rendered as a * or other special character. To eliminate excess, unreadable characters as much as possible, we suggest you set your PC Z39.50 client software to use ANSEL (e.g. EndNote - Connection Settings, Text field) or ALA (e.g. Bookwhere 2000 - Database Properties, Character Set) or Arial Unicode MS (e.g. ProCite5 - View, Configure Edit Record, Font). No changes are necessary for web-based Z39.50 clients.
