Program Description
The current focus on institutional digital content raises many questions, provoking thought and posing some risk. The emergence of DSpace and other digital repository software presents libraries with exciting opportunities and great challenges. Libraries have the opportunity to provide the needed solutions, to engage both local and external partners, and to help form institutional identity. In this environment, libraries are moving forward to address the range of needs surrounding the digital content and knowledge assets of their communities.
This symposium will address issues surrounding this theme, including:
- Identifying and supporting communities of interest
- The challenge of content recruitment
- Defining the scope and diversity of collections and content
- Transitioning from traditional archival approaches to distributed environments
- Enabling active roles of content creators
- Forming new regional, consortial and discipline based partnerships
- Providing and maintaining open access to content
- Adding value to the product of the whole
- Understanding the freedom and risks of action/inaction
