National Community Forestry Center - Northern Forest Region
About this Resource: In 1997, the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a call for proposals to develop regional centers providing technical services for rural communities. The National Network of Forest Practitioners (NNFP) - whose members share a commitment to rural community development based on sustainable forestry and a conviction that healthy communities and healthy ecosystems are interdependent - responded. The NNFP proposed a center to support community-based, participatory research addressing a wide range of economic, environmental, and social concerns among communities with forest land. Their proposal was selected from among hundreds of others, one of only six to receive funds to cover startup and operation for a four-year period. The National Community Forestry Center, Northern Forest Region, serves the States of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Central & Northeastern New York. The Centers' core purpose is to help rural people conduct and use research to make informed decisions about forest resources. The Centers' goal is to add value to the work of individuals and organizations fostering healthy communities and working forests that are both dynamic and diverse. The other three centers are located in the Pacific West; Southwest and Appalachian areas. The web site supports the Centers' goals.

This deals solely with the supply side costs of providing services and therefore excludes research on such topics as expenditure determinants of local governments and optimal city size. Research applying to size economies results is generally omitted. An appendix lists some research on these omitted topics.

Multispectral detection of organic residues on poultry processing plant equipment based on hyperspectral reflectance imaging technique
About this Resource: Diluted organic residues, such as feces, ingesta and other biological substances on poultry processing plant equipment surfaces, not easily discernible by human eye, are potential contamination sources for poultry carcasses. Development of sensitive detection methods for diluted organic residues is essential to ensure safe production of poultry carcasses. Hyperspectral imaging techniques have shown good potential for detecting the presence of fecal and other biological contaminants on food and processing equipment surfaces. In this study, the use of high spatial resolution hyperspectral reflectance is presented as a tool for selecting a few multispectral bands to detect diluted organic residues on the surface of materials used for manufacturing processing equipment. Reflectance imaging methods were explored for use in the detection of a range of diluted organic residues for both wet and dry conditions. Results showed that low concentrations of wet and dry residues, diluted up to 1:100 by weight with double distilled water, could be differentiated from stainless steel background with accuracies of 94.0 and 99.7%, respectively. Spectral bands determined in this study could be used for developing a multispectral inspection system for sanitation monitoring of poultry processing plants.

Hemicellulose bioconversion.
About this Resource: Various agricultural residues, such as corn fiber, corn stover, wheat straw, rice straw, and sugarcane bagasse, contain about 20-40% hemicellulose, the second most abundant polysaccharide in nature. The conversion of hemicellulose to fuels and chemicals is problematic. In this paper, various pretreatment options as well as enzymatic saccharification of lignocellulosic biomass to fermentable sugars is reviewed. Our research dealing with the pretreatment and enzymatic saccharification of corn fiber and development of novel and improved enzymes such as endo-xylanase, beta-xylosidase, and alpha-L-arabinofuranosidase for hemicellulose bioconversion is described. The barriers, progress, and prospects of developing an environmentally benign bioprocess for large-scale conversion of hemicellulose to fuel ethanol, xylitol, 2,3-butanediol, and other value-added fermentation products are highlighted.

The United States Government subsequently adopted the goal as a domestic target as well, and has embarked on the development of a U.S. Action Plan on Food Security to strengthen what the United States - government, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and other sectors of civil society - is already doing to reduce hunger and malnutrition both at home and abroad. This link is available through the Foreign Agricultural Service of the United States Department of Agriculture.
Physical and combustion characteristics of pellet fuel from cotton gin by-products produced by select processing treatments
About this Resource: Agricultural plant wastes when properly processed into useful commodities can become an economic asset. It has been estimated that over 2.04 million Mg of cotton by-products are generated each year in the United States. On average, disposal of these byproducts costs the cotton gin approximately $ 1.65 (U.S.) per Mg. One means of changing a financial liability into a potential revenue generator is to process the by-products into renewable, compact pellet-type fuel that can be used at the site or transported to the consumer. Furnace and water heaters that can burn pelletized plant materials have become popular and their safety, low pollution, and reasonable operational costs have been demonstrated. Also, the drastic increases in the price of liquified fuel and its uncertain supply place a premium for finding and using alternate, low-cost, cellulose-based fuels. The objectives of our study were to fabricate pellet fuel from cotton gin by-products using select processing techniques, determine its physical properties, and measure the emissions when fired in a commercial pellet stove used for residential heating. By-products from two cotton gins were collected and processed into fuel pellets. A total of seven different pellet fuels were evaluated, six from cotton gin by-products and one from wood. The treatments resulted from using different material streams from the ginning process as well as varying quantities of starch and/or crude cottonseed oil during the fuel pellet manufacturing process. The fuel pellet density from the various treatments ranged from 488 to 678 kg/m3. The various treatments were burned in a conventional pellet stove (four replications) and the gaseous and particulate emissions measured. The average calorific value of the pellets ranged from 17.9 to 20.9 MJ/kg (HHV). The ash content for the various treatments ranged from a low of 4.88% to a high of 9.75%. The sodium content indicated concentration ranges from 91 to 282 ppm depending on the treatment. The emissions from the cotton gin by-product pellets were higher than for a premium grade wood pellet. The emissions measured during testing were CO, NO, NO2, SO2, and particulates. The pellet stove was setup following the manufacturer's recommendation to burn wood pellets, but was not adjusted for the cotton gin fuel pellets. By utilizing various additives and processing techniques, cotton gin by-products could be used to manufacture a pellet fuel that has commercial potential. However, work remains to minimize the ash content and determine the optimal settings for maximizing combustion.

Case-control study of factors associated with excessive proportions of early fetal losses associated with mare reproductive loss syndrome in central Kentucky during 2001
About this Resource: Objective--To identify factors associated with excessive proportions of early fetal losses associated with mare reproductive loss syndrome in central Kentucky during 2001. Design--Case-control study. Procedure--Questionnaires were used to collect information on farm-, pasture-, and individual animallevel factors purportedly associated with mare reproductive loss syndrome. Data were collected for 133 farms (97 with excessive proportions of early fetal losses and 36 control farms) representing 6,576 mares. Results--Factors significantly associated with an increased risk of excessive early fetal losses were exposure to moderate to high concentrations of Eastern tent caterpillars, exposure to cherry trees, farm size >or= 50 broodmares, being bred during February 2001, and frequent exposure to waterfowl. Feeding hay to mares outside was associated with a decreased risk of excessive proportions of early fetal losses. Pasture composition and management factors were not significantly different between affected and control pastures. Individual animal-level factors were investigated on 6 farms representing 340 mares, and age, parity, and pre- and postbreeding treatments were not significantly associated with risk of early fetal loss. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance--Results suggest that limiting exposure to Eastern tent caterpillars and cherry trees and feeding hay to mares outside may help decrease the risk of excessive proportions of early fetal losses associated with mare reproductive loss syndrome.
