BVD decision / management guidelines for beef veterinarians
About this Resource: Characteristics of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), such as genetic diversity and ability to induce a persistently infected (PI) carrier state, make its control a challenge. The Academy of Veterinary Consultants (AVC) drafted and approved a position statement in 2001 resolving to adopt measures to control and target eventual eradication of BVDV from North America. As part of this effort, the AVC formed an ad hoc committee to develop a document to provide guidelines for BVDV control based on the best current information. The final document was approved by the AVC in 2003, and provides management guidelines for control of BVD in beef cow-calf herds, stocker operations and feedlots.

Weed Science Research and Funding: A Call to Action
About this Resource: Weed science has contributed much to agriculture, forestry and natural resource management during its history. However, if it is to remain relevant as a scientific discipline, it is long past time for weed scientists to move beyond a dominating focus on herbicide efficacy testing and address the basic science underlying complex issues in vegetation management at many levels of biological organization currently being solved by others, such as invasion ecologists and molecular biologists. Weed science must not be circumscribed by a narrowly-defined set of tools but rather be seen as an integrating discipline. As a means of assessing current and future research interests and funding trends among weed scientists, the Weed Science Society of America conducted an online survey of its members in summer of 2007. There were 304 respondents out of a membership of 1330 at the time of the survey, a response rate of 23%. The largest group of respondents (41%) reported working on research problems primarily focused on herbicide efficacy and maintenance, funded mainly by private industry sources. Another smaller group of respondents (22%) reported focusing on research topics with a complex systems focus (such as invasion biology, ecosystem restoration, ecological weed management, and the genetics, molecular biology, and physiology of weedy traits), funded primarily by public sources. Increased cooperation between these complementary groups of scientists will be an essential step in making weed science increasingly relevant to the complex vegetation management issues of the 21st century.

A current perspective on availability of tools, resources and networks for veterinary immunology
About this Resource: There are many diseases of fish, livestock and companion animals that impact negatively on animal health, welfare and productivity and for which there are no effective vaccines. The development of new vaccines is reliant on the availability of well-characterised immunological tools and reagents to understand host-pathogen interactions and identify protective immune responses. Veterinary immunology has always lagged behind mouse and human immunology in terms of development and availability of tools and reagents. However, several initiatives are underway to address this. The Veterinary Immunology Committee (VIC) Toolkit was initiated 6years ago at the sixth International Veterinary Immunology Symposium (IVIS) in Uppsala and in the intervening period there have been several notable developments that have advanced reagent development and information exchange. This review will discuss advances in veterinary reagent development, networks, databases and commercial availability with particular reference to the second VIC Toolkit workshop held at the eighth IVIS in Ouro Preto, Brazil on the 15th of August 2007.

A longitudinal study on the impact of Johne's disease status on milk production in individual cows
About this Resource: Longitudinal data from 3 commercial dairy herds in the northeast United States were collected from 2004 to 2007. Johne's disease status, as indicated by Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis infection levels, was determined through quarterly ELISA serum testing, biannual fecal culture, and culture of tissues at slaughter. Milk production data were collected from the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. The effect of Johne's disease status on milk production was analyzed using a mixed linear model with an autocorrelation random effect structure. Infected animals produced more milk than uninfected cows before they began shedding M. avium ssp. paratuberculosis. Cows infected with M. avium ssp. paratuberculosis had monthly decreases of 0.05 to 1 kg in daily milk production relative to uninfected animals, with greater decreases in progressive disease categories. Animals with fecal culture results of >30 cfu/g produced approximately 4 kg less milk per day compared with uninfected cows. These results will be valuable in calculating the economic effect of Johne's disease.

Timeliness and effectiveness of progeny testing through artificial insemination
About this Resource: Progeny-test (PT) programs of US artificial-insemination (AI) organizations were examined to determine timeliness of sampling, PT daughter distribution, rate of return of PT bulls to widespread service, and genetic merit of PT bulls compared with AI-proven and natural-service (NS) bulls. Bull age at semen release and at birth and calving of PT daughters was documented by breed (Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein, Jersey, and Milking Shorthorn) for bulls that entered AI service since 1960. Mean Holstein bull age at semen release (16 mo) changed little over time, but standard deviations (SD) decreased from 4.0 mo during the 1960s to 2.4 mo during the 1990s. Most Holstein bulls (80%) had semen released by 18 mo. Mean age of Holstein bulls at birth and calving of PT daughters during the 1990s was 29 and 56 mo, respectively (a decline of 4 mo from the 1960s); SD decreased from 6 to 3 mo. Bulls of other breeds usually were older at birth and calving of PT daughters, and SD were larger. Mean Holstein bull age when 80% of PT daughters had been born declined from 36 mo during the 1960s to 31 mo during the early 1990s; for other breeds, bulls showed the same trend but at older ages. Mean Holstein bull age when 80% of PT daughters had calved declined from 65 mo during the 1960s to 59 mo during the 1990s; for other breeds, bulls were older. Percentage of herds with PT daughters has increased over time. For Holsteins, herds with five or more usable first-parity records that had PT daughters with usable records increased from 15% during 1965 to 61% during 1998; percentage of herds with from 1 to 19% PT records increased from 11 to 38%, and percentage of herds with >50% PT daughters increased from 1 to 5%. Percentage of Holstein PT bulls returned to AI service declined to about 12% for bulls with PT entry around 1990; for other breeds, 12 to 23% of most recent PT bulls were returned to service. Percentage of milking daughters that had records usable for genetic evaluation that were sired by PT bulls increased steadily from 10 to 18%, whereas percentage of daughters with usable records that were sired by NS bulls declined from 14 to 7%. Milk yield of daughters of AI-proven bulls was 107 to 200 kg greater than for daughters of PT bulls and 366 to 444 kg greater than for daughters of NS bulls for all years. More extensive and rapid sampling and increased selection intensity of PT programs have led to more rapid genetic progress. More extensive use of AI could increase US producer income by millions of dollars annually.

Fifty Years of Grassland Science Leading to Change
About this Resource: Division C-6 was established in 2000, but members associated with forages and grazinglands have been active in the Crop Science Society of America (CSSA) since its inception; 21 have served as President and many authored textbooks and comprehensive reference works. Complex forage and pasture mixtures were common in 1955, but shifted to monocultures in the 1960s and 1970s. Mixtures returned in the 1980s as N prices increased, broader values of legumes became known, nutritive value was better understood, and environmental issues increased. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) for dairy production had strong leadership from the private sector in seed production and breeding. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) was well-adapted, conserved soil, and extended grazing in the transition zone to increase beef cow-calf production. Bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] benefited from vegetative propagation, conserved soil, and was improved for adaptation, yield, and nutritive value. Yield advancements, except for a few species, have been discouraging. Management benefited from advances in disease resistance, methods for assessing nutritive value, and understanding the role of endophytic fungi. Modest increases in nutritive value, coupled with improved pasture management, have increased animal performance. Emerging interests include biomass, carbon sequestration, and roles of biodiversity. Molecular techniques offer potential to better understand the plants and make genetic progress.
