Subject Directories

Subject directories are human-created indexes of the web. Web pages are categorized by hand into predefined subjects, usually by volunteers. Many also have paid or volunteer editors who help select the best of these pages. This means that the pages which are indexed are often of high quality and very relevant. However, because subject directories depend on humans to do the indexing, they are unable to effectively keep up with the growth of the web, so it may be difficult to find a specific page. To do that, you may want to try a search engine.

DMOZ Open Directory Project
The Open Directory mission is to become the largest human-edited subject directory on the Internet by harnessing the power of a large number of volunteer editors. Operating on a system of checks and balances to ensure quality, DMOZ is free to all users.
