Periodicals in the Wilson Library are not given catalog numbers (except for annuals, which are catalogued and shelved under their call number), but shelved by title in the Periodicals Collection, located on the basement level of this library. Research Collections

The University of Minnesota Libraries houses a considerable number of printed documents, statistical sources, government publications, and printed collection of letters, memoirs, and other primary sources. Most important primary sources related to Chicano and Latinos are housed in the Wilson Library, on the west bank of the Minneapolis campus.

The Government Publications Library, in the basement level of the Wilson Library, houses United States government publications, state of Minnesota documents, and Twin Cities Metropolitan Council publications with important information related to Chicanos and Latinos. While current materials at the Government Publications Library are represented in the University of Minnesota Libraries catalog (MNCAT), it is advisable to consult the reference staff in that special collection. For information on reference hours, call (612) 624-5073.

In addition to its paper sources, the Wilson Library has important microform collections. These include Chicano Studies Library Serial Collection (Microfilm 3859), Chicano newspapers filmed at the University of California - Berkeley, in an on-going project; and FBI File on Cesar Chavez & United Farm Workers (Microfilm 4015). There is a printed list of the titles in the Chicano serial collection available at the General Reference Collection of the Wilson Library, Chicano Studies Library Serial Collection: Guide (Wilson Reference quarto E184 .M5 C456x).

University Libraries Home Page

The University Libraries Home Page provides access to the University Libraries online catalog (MNCAT), and to a site with links to serial indexes online (ARTICLES AND MORE).

Para usar el catálogo de las bibliotecas use MNCAT. En este puede buscar libros y revistas por título, y libros por autor y tema también. Hay un tipo de búsqueda llamado "keyword" que permite hacer búsquedas con palabras de varios idiomas.
  • Finding Books and Periodicals (MNCAT)

The University Libraries online catalog is self-explanatory and user-friendly. Remember, in a library catalog you will only find entries for books, reports, journals, and documents owned by that library. Do not search in MNCAT for journal articles, conference papers, or essays in collective works. You may, though, search for the journal in which an article that you want to read was published. At this point in time, through MNCAT you may access works by author, title, subject, or keyword. The keyword command tells the system to make a visual search throughout the database looking for library records where the word or words that you may type appear.

Library records indicate the location of the item and its call number (if it has been given a catalog number; most periodicals at the University of Minnesota Libraries are shelved by title in alphabetical order.) Call numbers are numbers assigned to individual titles, and at the University of Minnesota Libraries a word indicating book size is prefixed to the call numbers of large (folio) and slightly larger (quarto) books. Books are shelved in stacks by call number and folios and quartos are shelved together in folio and quarto sections on each floor of the library stacks. The location in MNCAT records refers the user to the library or special collection in the University wide libraries system where the item that it describes is located.
  • Finding Articles in Journals and Periodicals (ARTICLES AND INDEXES)

The ARTICLES AND MORE site in the LUMINA menu gives access to a number of indexes (publications listing articles on a given discipline or subject area) available online. Once the user enters into this site he/she will find a menu indicating groupings of indexes by subject. Chicano Database is an online index listing only articles and books about Chicanos and Latinos. Informe is a full-text index of Chicano/Latino magazines on general interest and current event topics.

Other indexes useful for finding articles about Chicanos and Latinos are MLA Bibliography (for information on Chicano/Latino authors and their works), PAIS (for scholarly articles on public affairs), Sociological Abstracts (for scholarly articles on sociology), PsychINFO (for articles on social psychology), MasterFile Premier(for articles in popular and news magazine), and LEXIS-NEXIS (for articles from United States newspapers). Once one logs in an index database, one is given specific instructions on how to proceed.

Please, write down or print those instructions, because you are going to need them in order to get the information that you need, and they are not the same for each one of the indexes. Some online indexes will provide the text of the articles that they list, but that is not the case for most of them. In most cases you will have to locate in the library journals where the articles which you learned about are. Write down the author, title, journal of publication, volume, number, date, and page number for each article that you want to read. Faculty, students and staff may request through inter-library loans photocopies of journal articles from journals which the University of Minnesota Libraries does not have, and you will need the information mentioned above to fill an inter-library loan request form.

Even in cases where the online index lists the institutions holding the journal where the articles it cites were published, make sure that you search in MNCAT the title of the journal where the article you want to read was published.
