Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Wilson Library
    Wilson Library houses the main humanities and social sciences collections of the University Libraries. Wilson Reference Services (General & Specialized) provide support for both undergraduate and graduate research for the humanities and social sciences. Other University Libraries supporting Humanities and Social Sciences are: Architecture and Landscape Architecture Library; Borchert Map Library; Business Reference Service; East Asian Library; Government Publications Library; Learning Resources Center; and the Music Library.   • Guides/Handouts

    Agriculture, Life Sciences, Human Ecology on the St. Paul Campus
    These guides are primarily Internet based, but do have links to Research Quickstart pages that provide more library based resources on each topic as well.
    • Magrath Library
      Books, journals and government publications in agriculture, biological sciences, human ecology, design, housing and apparel, vocational education, applied statistics, food science and nutrition, family social science, rural sociology and agricultural, and applied economics. Other University Libraries supporting Agriculture, Life Sciences, and Human Ecology are: Entomology, Fisheries and Wildlife; Forestry Library and Plant Pathology Library.       • Biology (general aspects)
        This subject covers: the study of living things and their vital processes. The field deals with all the physicochemical aspects of life. (From Britannica Online)
      • Biotechnology
        This subject covers: the use of living cells or microorganisms in the large scale industrial processes, such as chemical synthesis and fermentation, including the genetic engineering of organisms for these purposes. Related topics are: Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Microbiology, and Engineering, Biomedical.
      • Clothing and Textiles
        This subject covers: the history, aesthetics, design, analysis, production, marketing , and social aspects of textile and apparel products. Other related topics are: Art & Art History, Design (General Aspects), Interior Design, and Retail Merchandising.
      • Design (general aspects)
        This subject covers: the design process, elements, principles, and evaluation, color theory and technology, and the history of design and the decorative arts. Other related topics are: Art & Art History, Clothing and Textiles, and Interior Design.
      • Economics, Agricultural and Applied
        This subject covers: Applied Economics or the application of economic tools and methodology to solving real economic problems. A variety of techniques beyond economics, including finance and decision sciences, are used. Although the study can be applied to any economic situation, the work of the department is heavily weighted to agricultural and natural resource solutions.
      • Ecology
        This subject covers: the study of the relationships between organisms and their environment. (From Britannica Online).
      • Environmental Science and Technology
        This subject covers: the entire biosphere and with all the external influences to which organisms are exposed, both physical (abiotic) influences and those originating with other organisms (biotic). Environmental science identifies and characterizes problems within the biosphere while environmental technology is concerned with find solutions to those problems.
      • Family Social Science
        This subject covers: the enhancement of family functioning in diverse family settings through the generation and application of knowledge from the social sciences that will contribute to increased understanding of families in a changing world.
      • Food Science
        This subject covers: the food continuum from the producer to the consumer, including food processing, product development, sensory evaluation, distribution and marketing, food safety, packaging and storage, preparation and serving. Related topics are: Nutrition, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Toxicology and Agriculture.
      • Horticulture
        This subject covers: the branch of plant agriculture dealing with garden crops, generally fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants. (From Britannica Online)
      • Plant Biology
        This subject covers: the study of plants, including their structure, properties, and biochemical processes. Also included are plant classification and the study of plant diseases and of interactions with the environment. (From Britannica Online) Also known as botany.
      • Plant Pathology
        This subject covers: the study of plant diseases and disorders and the effects of pests and pollution on plants.
      • Social Work
        This subject covers: the professional activity of helping individuals, groups, or communities enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning and creating societal conditions favorable to this goal. (NASW)
      • Soil Science
        This subject covers: the scientific discipline concerned with all aspects of soils, including their physical and chemical properties, the role of organisms in soil production and in relation to soil character, the description and mapping of soil units, and the origin and formation of soils.
