Instructional Services for Faculty & Students in the Carlson School of Management
Table of Contents:

Business Librarians are here to help with research and teaching needs. Some of the ways we can help are;
  • teach sessions on how to access and use library resources
  • select library materials that support curriculum and research needs
  • assist with literature searches
  • create web pages for faculty that link students to relevant information resources
  • design assignments that teach students how to find and manage information
  • keep library users up-to-date about new library resources
  • collaborate on projects or committees that utilize business information
  • advise on scholarly publication matters

Presentations and Workshops
  • We encourage Carlson School of Management instructors to request library briefings for their classes. Our business librarians are happy to visit a class and provide a tailored (assignment-specific) instructional session designed to introduce relevant library resources to students in the class. Call us at 612.624.5073 or email us at busref@umn.edu to arrange a library presentation for your class.

  • We can also arrange for your class to meet in one of Wilson Library's instructional rooms for a presentation or workshop on library research, or we can arrange for your class to meet in the Business Reference Service (basement, Wilson Library) for demonstrations of specific resources. Let us know where you like to meet.

Research Consultations
  • Our business librarians are available to meet with instructors or teaching assistants to offer advice about potential projects or assignments or to offer library orientation or research consultations for teaching staff.

  • We are also available to meet with a group of students in a class or with individual researchers. We can offer advice on research strategies, print and electronic sources, web searching, and more.

  • If you would like library research advice, or if you (or your group) would like to meet with a business librarian for a half-hour or hour-long research consultation, call us at 612.624.5073 or email us at busref@umn.edu to schedule an appointment. We look forward to hearing from you!

Business Research Web Guides
    CourseLib
    • We invite University of Minnesota instructors to ask our librarians to create a library resources and services Web page tailored for a specific class. These CourseLib Web pages list print and Web resources that will be useful for students in the class who will be working on specific assignments or with specialized subjects. The Web pages are created collaboratively with instructors or teaching assistants. Check out some of the business-related CourseLib pages we have created for classes in the past!

    • If you would like us to create a free Web page for your business-related class, call us at 612.624.5073 or email us at busref@umn.edu

    Research Quickstart

    • Don't know where to start with business library research? What are the best journal indexes in accounting? How can I find company or industry research? How can I get started with marketing research? The Research Quickstart web pages cover business subject areas and they provide a starting point for library and web searching. Both print and electronic resources are included. Check out Research QuickStart pages on business subjects.

    Business Research Guides

Visit this page to find a list of Guides listing the best library resources to use for business research. Most of the resources are available on the web. This is a great place to begin business research if you are unfamiliar with library resources.

Have a Business Question?

Electronic Reserves
The University of Minnesota Libraries introduces electronic reserve as an option for course readings. This allows instructors to have articles, syllabi, sample tests, and class notes placed online so that students can access them remotely.

  • Electronic Reserves F.A.Q.
Are you unsure of how to use e-reserves? Check out this Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for more information.
Course Reserves
Materials are placed on reserve at the request of instructors to support the academic programs of various departments. The preferred location of reserve materials is the library building or unit where most of the subject's materials are held. Please refer to your course syllabus to determine which library has your reserve readings.

Copyright Permissions
When you need permission to use copyrighted work in your instructional technology project, you have two options: seek permission yourself, or get help from the Copyright Permissions Center on campus.
  • The Permissions Process
From the Copyright Permissions Center: Faculty and staff request the assistance of the Copyright Permissions Center by submitting a copyright permission request for each source where permission is needed. Source information sheets are available for use and may be obtained from the Copyright Permissions Center, any Printing Services Copy Center location, or download the form in PDF format.
Assignment Calculator
Enter in the deadline for your research paper and get a suggested time-line for completing your paper on time plus links to the resources on campus that will help you succeed in each step of the research and writing process.
