- Create Census Maps
The Map Library (John R. Borchert) at the University of Minnesota has created a website to assist with finding and producing maps of census data.
Directions

Maps (Local and U.S.)
- Color Landform Atlas of the United States
Ray Sterner of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory has created a set of maps for each of the 50 states, unique from the general, political maps usually found on the web. For each state, he has created or provides: a shaded relief map, county map, black & white map, satellite image (NOAA-14), 1895 map (scanned Rand-McNally) and PostScript map.
- Google Maps
Google Maps is an online service that allows users in the U.S. to find location information, navigate through maps, and get directions quickly and easily. For example, a search for "pizza in Fridley MN" will create a map with locations of all pizza places in Fridley, with names and phone numbers to the right of the map.
- National Atlas of the United States
Created by the U.S. Department of the Interior, this interactive map tool allows users to create their own maps of areas within the 50 states according to a number of variables, including geology, environment, people, agriculture and biology. You'll need a fairly up-to-date version of Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator, but no special software.
- Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection, University of Texas at Austin
The University of Texas at Austin hosts this well-organized directory of maps (worldwide coverage) directly viewable on the web as .jpeg files. Most are reference maps produced by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, and therefore carry no copyright. Privately produced maps are made available via links. Note that many of the images are too large to be printed on letter-sized paper.
- U.S. Gazetteer
You can search for townships, cities, or counties in the U.S. by entering the name, state abbreviation (optional), or 5-digit zip code. The database provides 1990 census information and a link to a map of the area.
Maps (World)
- Holt, Rinehart and Winston World Atlas
Using a "click-able" map of the world, retrieve small, color maps of countries, regions, states, and continents. Each has an accompanying location map, and maps of nations include encyclopedic information such as area, population, languages, GDP, etc. along with an image of the national flag. Maps are of a very small scale, so are good for general reference purposes (but not for detail).
Map Library
- Map Library (John R. Borchert)
Main repository for cartographic materials, including thousands of maps, atlases, and aerial
photographs. The Automated Cartographic Information Center provides
access to digital spatial data, allowing library patrons to create and print their own maps.
