The Automated Cartographic Information Center provides access to digital spatial data, allowing library patrons to create and print their own maps. Map DemographicsNOW ![]() DemographicsNow consists of a variety of pre-formatted demographic data reports that are geographically customizable by the user. Basic demographics data includes consumer expenditures, population, income, race, housing, and employment. You can run reports in summary, comparison, or ranking formats. ‘Express’ packages include thematic maps along with the most commonly requested reports. Digital Sanborn Maps, 1867-1970 : Minnesota ![]() Sanborn fire insurance maps are the most frequently consulted maps in both public and academic libraries. Sanborn maps are valuable historical tools for urban specialists, social historians, architects, geographers, genealogists, local historians, planners, environmentalists and anyone who wants to learn about the history, growth, and development of American cities, towns, and neighborhoods. This collection covers Minnesota towns and cities from 1867-1970. Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection, University of Texas at Austin The University of Texas at Austin hosts this well-organized directory of maps (worldwide coverage) directly viewable on the web as .jpeg files. Most are reference maps produced by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, and therefore carry no copyright. Privately produced maps are made avilable via links. Note that many of the images are too large to be printed on letter-sized paper. Social Explorer ![]() Created by Queens College, City University of New York, and partnering with the University of Minnesota's own National Historical Geographic Information System, this subscription edition of Social Explorer offers the ability to create customized maps and reports of demographic, housing, and employment patterns throughout the United States using data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Data are available by decade between 1940 and 2000 for a variety of geographical entities that are as small as the census tract for certain areas. Holt, Rinehart and Winston World Atlas Using a "click-able" map of the world, retrieve small, color maps of countries, regions, states, and continents. Each has an accompanying location map, and maps of nations include encyclopedic information such as area, population, languages, GDP, etc. along with an image of the national flag. Maps are of a very small scale, so are good for general reference purposes (but not for detail). Color Landform Atlas of the United States Ray Sterner of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory has created a set of maps for each of the 50 states, unique from the general, political maps usually found on the web. For each state, he has created or provides: a shaded relief map, county map, black & white map, satellite image (NOAA-14), 1895 map (scanned Rand-McNally) and PostScript map. National Atlas of the United States Created by the U.S. Department of the Interior, this interactive map tool allows users to create their own maps of areas within the 50 states according to a number of variables, including geology, environment, people, agriculture and biology. You'll need a fairly up-to-date version of Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator, but no special software. Historical & Cultural Atlas Resource (OSSHE) Historical maps, or maps made in contemporary times portraying past events and circumstances, are available here, some of them interactive. The project is a joint effort of the Dept. of History and Dept. of Geography at the University of Oregon, and only covers Europe, Middle East & North Africa, and North America. A shockwave plug-in is required to use the interactive map resources. Yahoo! Maps Both Yahoo! Maps and MapQuest are commercial service allowing one to view and print simple road maps of almost anywhere in the world.
