Introduction
Wilson Library owns a wealth of research materials published in large sets in microfiche, microfilm, microcard, and microprint. To make these materials more widely known and to encourage their use, this guide lists and briefly describes those relevant to English and American literature acquired through early 1995.
The sets appear here alphabetically by main entry, preceded by a table showing their chronological span and types of materials. The description of each collection includes a note on its contents, its size, call number, and mention of separate indexes. A brief list of other relevant research collections available to us from the Center for Research Libraries follows our holdings.
Five other guides will aid scholars using microform materials. The first two identify local holdings. Microform Research Collections: An Annotated Directory by Vern Harman and Barbara Walden (Wilson Reference quarto Z733 .0104 .015 1981) describes microforms in all disciplines held in Wilson Library. Microform Research Collections for Historical Research in Twin Cities Libraries: An Annotated Guide, compiled by Barbara Walden (Wilson Reference quarto Z1033 .M5 W35x 1989) describes microform sets in history owned by libraries in the Twin Cities. Three others list sets more widely available. Bibliographic Guide to Microform Publications (Wilson Reference quarto Z1033 .M5 B53x 1987, 1988) lists microforms cataloged annually at the Library of Congress and the New York Public Library. Index to Microform Collections by Ann Niles (Wilson Reference quarto Z1033 .M5 I83 1984) provides an author and title index to the individual books comprising 26 microform collections. Microform Research Collections: A Guide by Suzanne Dodson, 1984 (Wilson Reference quarto Z1033 .M5 D64 1984) lists about 375 research collections in microform, some of which we own.
Microforms and reading machines are located in the Periodicals/Newspaper Room in the basement level of Wilson Library. The photocopy service, also in the basement of Wilson, can make paper copies from both microfilm and microfiche. Please direct comments on this guide or on our microform holdings in literature to Marcia Pankake, 170 B Wilson Library, (612) 624-7099.

as follows, each index given an alphabetical prefix:
A - General Prose
B - Fiction
C - Poetry
D - Book Reviews
E - Songs
F - Subject Files - Contents: The publisher calls this collection "American Periodicals Index" but the collection may be found cited in a number of ways. It previously was listed as ending in 1850 but later descriptive literature identifies the end as 1860. The index is based upon a close analysis of about 340 American magazines published roughly from 1730 to 1860. About 650,000 index cards were produced by the staff of WPA workers. Certain weaknesses are inherent in the index. Inexperience in indexing, deficiencies in grammar and spelling, illegible and faded handwriting cause some of the problems. However, the investigator will discover much illuminating data on American economics, politics, sociology, theatre, music and the fine arts, literature, history and foreign countries.

By July 1976 about 29,000 fiche covering some 5,000 volumes had been issued. The publisher's policy is to include books relating to the Americas which are "textually significant, with primary emphasis on North America. Thus many translations and subsequent editions are being omitted." Sabin originally intended to cover everything dealing with the political, governmental, military, economic, social and religious history of the Western Hemisphere from the discovery of the New World to the present. In 1929 it was determined necessary to fix end-dates for the various subjects included, and they range from 1800 to 1876. There is no main entry for the collection, nor series entry, nor set entry. Each item is separately cataloged. One must consult Sabin to determine what items one wants and then consult MNCAT for each item to see if it is actually available.

The University of Minnesota Libraries hold membership in the Center for Research Libraries, a non-profit cooperative located in Chicago. The CRL collections augment ours and include the microform collections listed below. Description of the collections are adapted and reprinted here by permission. (Call numbers for the bibliographies cited for each collection are for Wilson Library.) CRL materials are available for extended periods of time on interlibrary loan. Make all inquiries through the Interlibrary Loan office, 4 Wilson Library, 624-1806 (8:00-5:00, Monday-Friday). The Catalog for the Center for Research Libraries, which lists individual works in some but not all of the sets below, is in the Reference Room (Ref. Mfiche 11). Many individual volumes of the original publications are, of course, also in the book collections in Wilson Library.

The Center has microfiche copies of the material for 1826-1850 as listed in Kaplan, Louis, A Bibliography of American Autobiographies (Madison, 1962) (Wilson Reference CT25 .K37x 1961).
