General Interlibrary Loan Information

Interlibrary loan services are offered without charge by the University Libraries to promote coursework and scholarly research by providing access to materials not held by the University Libraries.

Some items are very difficult to obtain, including reference books, test/survey manuals, very old or rare items, software, audiovisual materials, and entire journal issues. We make our best effort to obtain materials you request, but cannot guarantee that your request will be filled successfully.

Who can use the service?

Wilson ILL serves the students, staff, and faculty of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus. To obtain service, you must complete a one-time registration form and have active borrowing privileges. Friends of the Library and holders of Special Privilege Cards are not eligible to use Interlibrary Loan, but may obtain materials not held by the University of Minnesota via the fee based services, ESTIS or the Bio-Medical Information Service, or by requesting the material through their local public library.

What does it cost?

Most materials are available without charge to the patron. If a fee is required, you will be contacted for approval before the material is ordered.

What can I request?

Types of materials available through Interlibrary Loan include books, dissertations, government publications, and photocopies of articles. Current periodicals or newspapers, rare books, new books, videos, and recordings may be difficult to obtain or unavailable for loan.

Interlibrary Loan generally does not offer service for the following types of materials. If your coursework or research project requires access to these types of materials, you may contact the Interlibrary Loan office to request a policy override.

How can I request materials?

Materials may be requested in a number of ways:

Catalogs and Databases:
When a book or article has been located in WorldCat or RLIN/EUREKA, or in many online Indexes, you can easily initiate an Interlibrary Loan request. Depending upon the system, you may see an Interlibrary Loan/ILLiad link or a Find It button.

Web:
Log on to ILLiad and select the appropriate request type form. An Internet ID and Password are required to access the form. The system requires a one-time registration. A separate form is required for each item.

Note:
Telephone and email requests are not accepted. Email should be used only for communicating with Interlibrary Loan staff.

How long does it take?

Books usually arrive in 4-10 days and articles typically arrive within 2-7; the length of time varies depending on availability, shipping and other factors. It is best to request materials well in advance of your deadline.

What do the ILLiad statuses mean?

If you're curious about a specific Request Status, please view the Request Status Definitions page for more information.

If you'd like to check the status of your request, please login to your ILLiad account or contact Interlibrary Loan.

How will I be notified?

Whenever possible, articles will be accessible through your ILLiad account. An email notice of availability will be sent. The article will be available for 30 days before it is deleted from the server. Photocopied articles that we are unable to post to the server are mailed directly to the campus or US mail address provided in your ILLiad account.

When borrowed materials arrive you will be notified via email. Faculty and staff who have selected delivery to their campus address will receive a message that the item has been sent via campus mail.

Where do I pick up the materials?

Materials can be picked up from the Circulation Desk at the location you chose, during their regular business hours. Your account must be in good standing and a valid University of Minnesota ID is needed to check out materials. Materials circulating from any location except Wilson require two business days transit time.

Campus delivery
Circulating materials requested by faculty and staff are delivered to the campus address provided within your ILLiad account. Students with disabilities may request their materials be delivered to them, on campus, via the Libraries to U service.

Restrictions placed by the lending libraries may prevent mailing some items.

Off campus delivery
Off-campus delivery is available upon request and agreement to pay the following fees:
Book delivery off campus (Rates are subject to change without notice):

Shipping from the Libraries: UPS Ground delivery is $4 plus $1 per item.

For Fed Ex delivery, patrons must contact us for a price quote.

Patron also pays UPS or FedEx return shipping charges.

How do I request a renewal?

Items can be renewed in your ILLiad account within one week prior to the due date.

Will I be fined for overdue materials?

Interlibrary Loan materials are due by the date indicated on the book strip that is attached to the front of the material. Books that are not returned or renewed by the date due will be assessed a fine at the rates listed below:

Overdue material will block your ability to initiate new requests. Once the material is returned, you will need to contact Interlibrary Loan staff to clear your account.

What if I damage or lose the material?

Material damaged or not returned will be subject to replacement costs (determined by the lending library) plus a $30 processing fee, and, if applicable, the maximum overdue fine. Please inform Interlibrary Loan if the material is damaged while in your possession. To avoid overdue fines, please notify Interlibrary Loan immediately if material is lost or stolen.

Where should I return the material?

Material should be returned to the circulation desk at the library where it was picked up. Interlibrary Loan material should not be placed in the book return slides. Material delivered via campus mail in LUMINA to U mailing bags may be returned by campus mail in the same mailing bag.

Circulation

We offer circulation for interlibrary loan material from four campus libraries. You can change your preferred pickup location in your ILLiad account. Faculty and staff may request delivery to their campus address.

Note: Materials circulating from any location except Wilson require two business days transit time.
