Course Reserves Catalog
Materials submitted to the Libraries by instructors are listed in the Twin Cities Course Reserve Catalog. This catalog contains the most comprehensive listing of materials on course reserve, with the exception of Law Library reserve materials. Use of this material is limited to enrolled students.

Print Reserve
Materials are placed on reserve at the request of instructors to support the academic programs of various departments. The preferred location of reserve materials is the library or unit where most of the subject's materials are held. Please refer to the course syllabus or Twin Cities Course Reserve Catalog to determine where materials for a course are located. Use the list of libraries to the right to find out more information about each library's reserve department.

Electronic Reserve
The electronic reserve service (known as E-Reserve or ERes) allows instructors to make readings and other materials available to students online. E-Reserve material is accessible 24-7 and can be selected from a variety of sources, including electronic journals and other content licensed through the Libraries.

Copyright and Fair Use for Print and Electronic Reserves
Applications of fair use are predicated on the Libraries' General Principles of Fair Use in Education, and require access controls that restrict access to reserve materials to only registered students and their instructors.
Whenever copyrighted works are used for course reserves under the provisions of Fair Use (Section 107), instructors are responsible for the following:
- All materials used support course-related teaching, scholarship, or research.
- Determination, on a case-by-case basis, whether the use of a copyrighted work requires permission or qualifies as fair use. University Libraries staff will provide consultation assistance in evaluating the qualification of any specific use as a fair use. In addition an online tool is available to document the fair use analysis.
- When permissions are needed, instructors or their departments are expected to make arrangements for permissions
- Whenever copying original materials is involved, whether the copies are made by instructors or by the library, only the amount needed to accomplish the specific educational purpose should be copied. In consultation with library staff, instructors will determine any limits on the amount of material to be used.
