Liaison and Outreach Librarian - Health Sciences Libraries
The University of Minnesota Health Sciences Libraries (HSL) seeks innovative and energetic applicants for the position of Liaison and Outreach Librarian. The liaison and outreach librarian is a primary conduit of communication between the Libraries and the faculty, students and staff that the HSL serve through the application of subject and domain knowledge, and development of strong and strategic connections with the academic, clinical, research and collegiate units within the Academic Health Center (http://www.ahc.umn.edu/). A successful candidate will develop collaborative relationships with assigned academic units within the Academic Health Center, actively engaging in course-integrated instruction, providing research consultations and helping to build collections, primarily digital, to support these units. In addition, he or she will coordinate a growing outreach service that focuses on unaffiliated users such as consumers (through projects such as My Health Minnesota → Go Local), public librarians, and unaffiliated health professionals as part of the University’s land grant mission. A successful candidate will also contribute to the University Libraries and the profession as he/she works towards continuous appointment.
This position reports to the Associate Director of Liaison, Education and Interdisciplinary Services as a member of highly collaborative, dynamic unit. Responsibilities include:- Establishing and maintaining liaison relationships with Academic Health Center (AHC) units
- Coordinating the Health Sciences Libraries’ consumer health and outreach mission including establishing and maintaining relationships with public librarians, hospital librarians, and unaffiliated health professionals in Minnesota
- Providing instruction, research consultation, and literature search services both in the library and in the academic units, and to community based practitioners who teach AHC students
- Helping build collections supporting the Academic Health Center’s mission
- Participating on University Libraries’ and AHC committees and working groups as appropriate
The Health Sciences Libraries consists of the Bio-Medical Library and Wangensteen Historical Library of Biology and Medicine on the Minneapolis campus and the Veterinary Medical Library on the St. Paul Campus. HSL serves the Academic Health Center’s six professional schools, more than 20 multidisciplinary research institutes, and numerous graduate programs in the health sciences, and is one of the five major collections of the University Libraries. The Health Sciences Libraries have 60 FTE staff, including 14 academic staff. The collection includes 3,200 current journal subscriptions (of which 2,600 are electronic). More than 67,000 rare and historical books and journals dating from the 15th century to 1925 can be found in the Wangensteen Historical Library of Biology and Medicine.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Master’s degree from an American Library Association-accredited school of library and information science or equivalent combination of advanced degree and relevant experience
- demonstrated knowledge, through education or experience, of issues and trends in health sciences libraries, including use of print and electronic resources
- excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
- demonstrated creativity, initiative and self-direction
- ability to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues and library users in a service-oriented, research intensive environment
- strong technology skills, especially Web 2.0 applications
Preferred:
- education or experience in a life sciences or clinical field
- experience in reference and instruction in a health sciences or research library
- knowledge of consumer health resources and services and issues in health information literacy
- experience in working in multicultural settings
SALARY AND BENEFITS: This is a full-time, 12-month, continuous appointment track, academic/professional position with probationary appointment at the Assistant or Associate Librarian rank, dependant upon qualifications. Minimum salary: $40,000. Excellent benefits and moving allowance.
