Wilson SMART Learning Commons Policies
General use policies
- Only UM students, staff, and faculty with a valid x500 username and password can use the Wilson SMART Learning Commons.
- SLC staff member are here to help you with software or library research. Please ask if you have a question.
- SLC staff is not responsible for personal belongings.
- Cell phones are not permitted in the Wilson SMART Learning Commons. Please hold your conversations in the lobby area in front of Wilson Library or in the stairwells.
- No food is allowed in the Wilson SMART Learning Commons. Beverages are allowed in closed, spill-proof containers, but must not be in close proximity to the computers.
- The Wilson SMART Learning Commons is not a quiet study area. There is a quiet study space available on the third floor of Wilson Library.
- Part or all of the Wilson SMART Learning Commons will sometimes be used to teach classes. When a class is scheduled, you may be asked to move to another computer or to another lab in order to make room for the class.
- Headphones can only be checked out to patrons presenting a valid University ID. We cannot accept alternate forms of identification for this purpose.
Computer use
- The SLC is for academic-related uses.
- While gaming is not prohibited in the Wilson SMART Learning Commons, priority will be given to those performing University related work.
- Chat and email should be course-related. If it is not course-related, the SLC staff can request that you move to one of the many kiosks or computer labs located on campus.
- Preference on multimedia computers is given to patrons who need the software or hardware that is only available on these computers.
- If there is no activity on the computer (movement on the keyboard or mouse), the computer will be automatically logged out after 15 minutes and any unsaved work will be lost. Save often.
- Anyone gone from a computer for more than 15 minutes can lose their computer if others are waiting.
- SLC computers are cleared every night and all files will be cleaned from the computer at this time. Please save all documents on a floppy disc, CD, jump drive, or your UM server space.
- Downloading software to the SLC computers is prohibited.
