Finding articles and journals

If you would like to search for articles on a particular topic:

  • To search for articles on a particular topic use Indexes.
  • Need help choosing an index?
  • Indexes are like search engines, usually dealing with a broad subject. They:
      1. Help you search for articles on a particular topic.
      2. Some even provide the full text of the article.
      3. May also contain records for government documents, books and book chapters, dissertations, theses, images, and more.
    • You can also try searching for articles using Electronic Journals.

If you have an article citation with the periodical title:

  • Using MNCAT , the University Libraries catalog, search for the title of the journal or magazine (not the article title).
  • Once you find the journal, make sure to click on "Availability" to see if the volume/year you need is available.
  • How do I know if this journal is available online?
The MNCAT record will say "TC Internet Resource Online Resource" if it is available online. Alternately, look up the journal on our E-Journals page.
  • What if I have a citation with the journal title abbreviated (i.e., J. am. chem. Soc)?
You can search the abbreviation in MNCAT as if it were a title.
  • How do I get the article if the journal is at another UMN-Twin Cities library?
See if the journal is available online. If not, you will need to go to the library and photocopy the article yourself, or use our Libraries to U service. They will copy/scan the article and deliver it via mail or email for a fee ($5.00 per article).
  • What if the journal isn't in MNCAT or we don't have the volume/year you need?
You can submit a Interlibrary Loan request to get a copy of the article from another library. Articles are usually posted to the web; you will receive an email when it arrives.
