The University Libraries will offer "distraction-free" studying for finals that includes extended hours in our buildings, as well as stress-reducing activities. Use our spaces, our computers, our coffee shops, get help when you need it, and take a break with our awesome activities. Check out these coloring sheets designed by students.

  • Tuesday, December 8 from 9:00am to 1:00pm - the student group DeStress will be at the Library with positive thought cards.
  • Wednesday, December 9 from 11:00am to 1:00pm - free chair massages

Walter Library (East bank)

Extended Hours:
Open 24/7 starting on Thursday, December 10 at 8:00AM, ending Wednesday, December 23 at 6:00PM. After midnight, a U Card will be required for entry.

Study Break Activities:
  • Throughout finals - Bring out your inner child! Eat, play, and be healthy! We will have coffee, healthy snacks, and earplugs available throughout the week at the desks. Build with LEGOs and kinetic sand. Try the mini rock garden and rock balancing. Make origami and snowflakes and help to color a giant mural.
  • Try the *new* Relaxation Room - No studying allowed! Stretch, meditate, pray, breathe, or listen to the sounds of nature in a relaxation zone in the SMART Learning Commons. Yoga mats and pillows will be available.
  • Friday, December 18 - design and make a button with wrapping paper and other colorful materials

Magrath and St. Paul Libraries

Open until midnight December 11 through Wednesday, December 23 and the extended study area until 2 a.m. with U Card

Study Break Activities:

  • Monday, December 14 and Tuesday, December 15 from 11:00am to 2:00pm - Sketch with the Bell Museum, coloring club station and pop Bubble Wrap.
  • Wednesday, December 16 and Thursday, December 17 from 11:00am to 2:00pm - Design and make a button and free coffee/tea study break.
  • Wednesday, December 16 and Thursday, December 17 from 12:00pm to 2:00pm - Reiki 10-minute sessions (Japanese technique for stress reduction through working with energy points). Register for a reiki session.

Tutors and consultants will be out in force at the SMART Learning Commons and the MCAE Instructional Center. Work with knowledgeable peers to jump start your prep week. Snacks and free selected practice exams will also be available.

  • An escort is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Please call 4-WALK (4-9255) if you would like an escort. The escort area covers all campuses and locations within a mile of campus.
  • The Gopher Chauffeur is a free transportation service that promotes safety in the campus community by providing University of Minnesota students with safe rides home. We operate from 10:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The service is open to all University of Minnesota-Twin Cities students. Gopher Chauffeur drivers, navigators, and dispatchers are hired by Boynton Health Service. All employees are University of Minnesota-Twin Cities students who are CPR certified and trained in first aid. Please call 612-388-6911 for a ride.
