Visit our collection

Until further notice, access to the Map Library is limited to library staff only.

For access to many of our maps, aerial photographs, and other physical materials, please search for the item in Libraries search. Sign in and place a “Get It” request and you can pick up items at one of our four open buildings — Wilson, Walter, Health Sciences, and Magrath libraries — or have them delivered to your office or residence hall.

For access to non-circulating materials or for in-depth research assistance, please send an email to mapref@umn.edu.

Getting started

Anyone is welcome to use the collections and materials in the Map Library. Due to the unique and historical nature of cartographic collections, some collections are kept in secure storage only accessible by staff.

Please contact us for more information or to make an appointment. Many of our collections materials are also available online. Please see our homepage for access to digitized collections.

Making an appointment

Appointments are strongly encouraged. Advanced notice of your visit will allow time for us to identify possible resources and retrieve relevant collection materials. Desk assistants may not be able to retrieve materials for walk-in patrons, depending on the complexity of the inquiry.

Preparing for your visit

Scanning, printing, and saving
  • Feed-through sheet scanner (up to 44" wide) and flat-bed scanners (up to 11" x 17") are available to use free of charge. Scanners are for use only with library materials.
  • Printing is available for a fee. Please see our Printing Services page for more information.
  • Digitized map files can be large. Saving to a flash drive or uploading to cloud-based storage is recommended.
Workstation access

UMN Affiliates and Friends of the Library have unlimited access to library workstations. Non-UMN Affiliates will need to stop by the service desk on the 1st Floor of Wilson Library to obtain a computer workstation card. For more information, please see the Library Computers page.
