Hess Collection: Research Quick Start

A great place to start your research is by reviewing some of the Hess Collection digital resources listed below. You will find digital dime novels to read as well as links to other collections of primary source material.

Recommended print sources

Bleiler, Everett Franklin, Editor. Eight Dime Novels. New York: Dover Publications, 1974. Contains eight complete dime novels, focusing on several of the better known titles and characters including Nick Carter, Buffalo Bill, and Frank Merriwell.

Cook, Michael L. Dime Novel Roundup: Annotated Index 1931-198. Bowling Green, Ohio: Bowling Green University Popular Press, 1983. Contains an index of the collector's periodical Dime Novel Roundup. DNR also serves as an excellent resource for scholars by providing bibliographic listings and other publishing information.

Cox, J. Randolph. The Dime Novel Companion: A Source Book. Westport, Conn.: Greenwood Press, 2000. Contains over 1,200 entries arranged alphabetically by topic. Helpful for starting a subject search, as it contains entries for topics as diverse as "sea stories" or "bandit, outlaw, and highwayman stories." Also contains a useful publishing chronology and a bibliography of secondary sources.

Johannsen, Albert. The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels. Norman, Oklahoma: University of Oklahoma Press, 1950. Two-volume set that contains a complete history and bibliography of the Beadle and Adams publishing empire. Also contains author biographies and several indexes.
