Did you know the University Libraries can help students save money on course materials? Check out the services below for ideas about how to use University Libraries' resources and services to help decrease the cost of attending college.

Check the Required Course Materials Ebooks List

In partnership with the University Bookstore, the Libraries has created a list of ebooks being used as course materials that are available through the library for each semester. In some cases, the library has actually purchased an ebook based on the Bookstore’s list of required materials. These ebooks allow for multiple users and are free for students to access. We've already paid for these ebooks so you don't have to.

Course Materials in MNCAT Discovery

Search for books and other course materials in MNCAT Discovery, the library catalog.

With UBorrow you can search and request books from 13 major research libraries. You will receive books faster than with recalls or traditional interlibrary loan and you can keep books longer. Try to UBorrow your course books!

Library Course Pages

The Library Course Page features tools and resources that can help students in their research process. Instructors may work with their department's subject librarian to enhance content on the library course page to maximize student success.

Course Reserves

We encourage instructors to use the Libraries Course Reserves service to create course reading and materials lists. Many of the items typically found in course reading lists are already freely available through the University Libraries. The course reserves staff work with instructors to make course materials available to students in one place in an easily accessible format. A course reserves page can also be integrated with Moodle. Students can view course reserves in Reserves Direct.

Content Acquisition and Discovery of Existing Resources

We can help instructors find customized course content and materials already purchased through the University Libraries. The Libraries has access to thousands of full-text databases, journals, and e-books that can easily be integrated into your course environment. Utilizing library content saves students money. We can help you find it. Contact your department's subject librarian or course reserves staff to get started.

Open Textbooks

Textbook costs create a financial burden on college students that can impact their academic success. The rising costs of commercial textbooks have continued to outstrip inflation, adversely affecting access to higher education and student learning as students forgo buying textbooks altogether. Open textbooks can help alleviate the burden of textbook costs. Open textbooks are full, real textbooks that are licensed to be freely used, edited, and distributed. An increasing number of quality open textbooks are available for faculty to choose from. Projects such as Open Textbook Library and OpenStax College provide access to free, peer-reviewed textbooks covering a wide variety of subjects. Learn more about open educational resources.
