What is the origin of the quotation on the dedication plaque near the front of Wilson Library?

Owen Meredith Wilson (1909-1998), after whom Wilson Library is named, was president of the University of Minnesota from 1960 to 1967. Wilson chose the quotation from his personal archive of speeches and papers, which are held in the University Archives.

The quotation reads: "Among free men wisdom is strength, reason is change and ideas are the source of power."

Owen Meredith Wilson is not the Meredith Willson (1902-1984) best known for writing and composing THE MUSIC MAN and other musicals.
