    The University of Minnesota Libraries is one of the University's and the State's greatest intellectual and capital assets. Housed in five major facilities and eleven branch sites, the University Libraries is comprised of over 5 million print volumes, 48,000 serial subscriptions, 5 million microforms, 3 million government documents, and 397,000 maps, making it the 17th largest research library in North America.

    WorldCat is another important catalog produced by OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. WorldCat consists of over 30 million records that cite material owned by libraries around the world. Books, magazines, recordings; virtually any type of material cataloged by OCLC member libraries is included. WorldCat is updated daily. WorldCat is also useful for locating materials at other libraries and verifying citations for possible request via interlibrary loan.

  • Native Americans: an Annotated Bibliography

  • North American Indian Thought and Culture Authentication Required
    When complete, the database will represent the largest compilation ever created of biographical information on indigenous peoples from all areas of North America. Including biographies, autobiographies, oral histories, reference works, manuscripts, and photographs, the database presents the life stories of American Indians and Canadian First Peoples in their own words and through the words of others. Much of the material is previously unpublished, rare, or hard to find. New and current full-length biographies include works on Quanah Parker, Dennis Banks, Susan La Flesche Picotte, Cochise, Jim Thorpe, Crowfoot, Peter Pitchlynn, Sacajawea, Geronimo, Hosteen Klah, Black Elk, Pocahontas, George Washington Grayson, Standing Buffalo, and many more. More than twenty volumes covering chiefs of various nations are now included, as well as a modern edition of the collected speeches of Sitting Bull. The Center for Indigenous Arts & Cultures' five-volume encyclopedia on American Indian Artists has been added ("American Indian Art Series"), and the recent publication, American Indian Biographies (Salem Press, 2005) also adds many contemporary names to the collection.

  • Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents
    The Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents is published every Monday by the Office of the Federal Register, National Archives and Records Administration and contains statements, messages, and other Presidential materials released by the White House during the preceding week.

    Provides current information about social and cultural issues including art, health, law, sovereignty, race relations, religion, tribes, treaties and other topics.

  • eHRAF Archaeology (online) Authentication Required
    The eHRAF Collection of Archaeology covers the prehistory of the world with a growing collection of full-text information (e.g. books, journal articles, and dissertations) on archaeological traditions.The collection is unique in that the text is subject-indexed to the paragraph level for quick retrieval of information.
  • eHRAF World Cultures Authentication Required
    Contains FULL-TEXT information on over 360 cultures of the world, past and present. Electronic HRAF contains resources added since 1991 but earlier segments will be added to this database on a regular basis.
  • Handbook of North American Indians
    This comprehensive encyclopedia is still being published. Many volumes deal with regions of North America; other volumes address broad topics such as languages, Indian-White relations. Check MNCAT for full listing of volumes currently available.

  • Statistical Abstract of the United States
    The Statistical Abstract of the United States, published since 1878, is the authoritative and comprehensive summary of statistics on the social, political, and economic organization of the United States. Use the Abstract as a convenient volume for statistical reference, and as a guide to sources of more information both in print and on the Web. Sources of data include the Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and many other Federal agencies and private organizations. The online version has full text from 1995-, although the series as a whole starts in 1878.

  • Statistical Record of Native North Americans

  • Historical Statistics of the United States, Colonial Times to 1970
    Published by the Census Bureau, this set contains U.S. Statistics from Colonial times to 1970. Subjects covered are population, vital statistics, migration, labor, prices and price indexes, national income and wealth, consumer income and expenditures, social statistics, land, water, climate, agriculture, forestry and fisheries, minerals, construction and housing, manufacturing, transportation, communications, energy, trade, productivity, financial markets and institutions, government, colonial and pre-federal statistics.

  • American Historical Images On File: The Native American Experience
    A good collection of historical images arranged chronologically from the prehistoric period and the Paleo-Indians to 1990 contributed by Professor Troy Johnson of California State University, Long Beach. Images include paintings, drawings, sketches, and photographs.
  • WWW Virtual Library - American Indians
    Subtitled "Index of Native American Resources on the Internet", this index includes Native American cultural sites, links to museums, online short stories and articles, as well as educational and government resources for Native Americans.

American Indian Studies encompasses so many diverse topics and fields of study, the best way to begin your research would be to consult the general guides to our electronic resources.
