Guide to JPRS (Joint Publications Research Service) Reports

The Joint Publications Research Service (JPRS) Reports, first published in 1958, "...selects, translates, and abstracts foreign language political and technical media for federal agencies. Most JPRS reports are concerned with publications in communist countries, though materials from all nations may be translated. About half of the reports are in the scientific and technical fields." Source: Morehead, Joe. Introduction to United States Public Documents. 2nd ed. (Libraries Unlimited, Inc.: 1978) p. 117.

Searching for JPRS Reports
  • Monthly Catalog 1958 - 1963
JPRS reports are indexed in the Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications from 1958 - 1995. To locate a report from 1958 - 1963, look in the Monthly Catalog. Indexing for these years is limited. Reports are usually listed serially under the indexing entry of Joint Publications Research Service, and not by individual report title. For later years, subject/title searches can be completed using the following sources.
  • Subject Index to Joint Publications Research Service Translations 1966 - 1968
An in-depth subject index to Joint Publications Research Service (JPRS) Reports for the selective time frames of January - June 1966 and 1967 - 1968. Published on a semi-annual basis.
Check MNCAT Record for Location and Availability
  • Catalog Cards in Book Form for United States Joint Publications Research Service Translations (CBF) 1964 - 1969
Used to perform subject searches in JPRS Reports. For each semi-annual edition of CBF there is an index by geographic region; each region's publications are then indexed under several major and minor indexing terms. Records are arranged sequentially by JPRS Report number.
Check MNCAT Record for Location and Availability
  • Transdex Bibliography 1970 - 1974
Transdex (formerly published as Catalog Cards in Book Form for United States Joint Publications Research Service Translations (CBF)), includes expanded search indexing for serial and ad hoc JPRS reports such as: country/title, subject, publications and author indexes.
Check MNCAT Record for Location and Availability
  • Transdex Index 1976 - 1996
The Transdex Index includes Joint Publications Research Service (JPRS) Report indexes for: series and ad hoc title, keyword, personal name and publication. Some hard copies are owned by GPL but the majority are cumulative versions published semi-annually in microfiche, and filed at the end of the JPRS microfiche.
