ARTstor Basics
What is ARTstor?
ARTstor is a new, cross-disciplinary image database. It offers collections of approximately 400,000 art images and descriptive information covering art, architecture and archeology. ARTstor's accompanying software tools will support a wide range of pedagogical and research uses including: viewing and analyzing images through features such as zooming and panning, saving groups of images online for personal or shared uses, and creating and delivering presentations both online and offline.

  • Create collections...
Image Groups can be saved for future use or presentation. Image Groups can be created in public or private folders. Public folders can be shared with classes or for collaboration.
  • Create presentations...
Using online and offline presentation tools, you can project and view your ARTstor Image Groups. You can add your own personal images to an offline presentation. Notes and comments can be private or shared with other ARTstor users and are searchable as well.
  • Create links...
ARTstor can generate web addresses (URLs) that will allow other ARTstor users to jump directly into an Image Group you've created, or an image that you want to highlight.
Access to ARTstor is through the U of M Libraries Homepage ( Choose "A" from the alphabetical list for Indexes and Databases, and then scroll down to select ARTstor.

Before you begin
Make sure your computer has the following Technical Requirements to operate ARTstor.

Register with ARTstor
All students, staff and faculty at the University of Minnesota can use ARTstor to search, browse, open images and analyze the image data. In order to save images into groups and use the higher-level features, regular users of ARTstor will want to register. You can register easily on the main Search and Browse Images page of ARTstor, and you will be asked for a valid e-mail address and a password. We recommend that you follow good security practice and choose a password that is different from those you use to access other systems. Do not use your U of M password!

Instructor Privileges
Faculty and instructors are eligible for a higher level of access that will allow for creating Image Groups that can be shared with classes and colleagues. To obtain a password, contact Deborah Ultan Boudewyns( or 612-625-6438) at Wilson Library.

For Detailed Help
ARTstor Help is very thorough and well-organized, an excellent resource for beginners and more advanced users.
