  • Digital Sanborn Maps, 1867-1970 : Minnesota Authentication Required
    Sanborn fire insurance maps are the most frequently consulted maps in both public and academic libraries. Sanborn maps are valuable historical tools for urban specialists, social historians, architects, geographers, genealogists, local historians, planners, environmentalists and anyone who wants to learn about the history, growth, and development of American cities, towns, and neighborhoods. This collection covers Minnesota towns and cities from 1867-1970.

  • Metropolitan Council 1997 Digital Aerial Photography for the Seven-county Metropolitan Area of Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN
    1997. Digitized black & white contact prints of aerial photography created by Horizons, Inc., under contract with the Metropolitan Council of the Twin Cities Area. Represented counties within the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area include Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington. Imagery can be viewed as TIFF files in an image viewer. Multiple CDs.
  • Metropolitan Council 1997 Digital Orthophotography for the Seven-county Metropolitan Area of Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN
    1997. Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quads (DOQQs)--georeferenced, rectified digital aerial photography--at a scale of 1:40,000 covering the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. Counties represented include Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington. Imagery can be viewed as TIFF files in an image viewer or used in GIS. Multiple CDs.

    2005. Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quads (DOQQs)--georeferenced, rectified digital aerial photography--at a scale of 1:50,796 covering the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. Counties represented include Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington. Black & white, color, and color near-infrared images are available as MrSID files, which can be used in ArcGIS or viewed in standard Web browsers using LizardTech's ExpressView Browser Plug-in. 5 CDs.

  • Minnesota's Wetland Resources
    1997. GIS shapefiles for use in ArcGIS or ArcView 3.x. Contains shapefiles for statewide wetland data from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's National Wetlands Inventory and other GIS county data from the Minnesota DNR Division of Waters.

  • Minnesota Natural Resources Data created through the University of Minnesota Center for Urban and Regional Affairs' Sustainable Lakes Project
    These datasets, derived from a variety of public sources including the USGS and the MN DNR, represent a diverse collection of primarily natural resource and environmental data for Minnesota such as historic vegetation, land use/land cover, slope, soil, groundwater contamination potential, septic tank suitability, and scenically attractive areas. Data date from the mid- to late-1990s and can be used in ArcGIS or ArcView 3.x.
  • Minnesota Trunk Highway Traffic Volume Maps
    2000. MNDOT maps of highway traffic statistics in PDF format.
  • Twin Cities Metropolitan Area GIS Parcel Data Authentication Required
    Local and county governments in the seven-county Twin Cites metropolitan area manage their land parcel information in GIS format. The Metropolitan Council provides a license to the University of Minnesota for staff or students to use this parcel data for academic projects. While these data are not made available in the ACIC, University-affiliated individuals can visit the University's geospatial wiki site or speak with map library staff for more information about these data and acquiring access.
  • USGS Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles (Minnesota)
    Digital, rectified, georeferenced aerial photos for the entire state of Minnesota. Files can be used with GIS software in the ACIC lab or viewed as jpeg images.

  • 1:100,000-Scale DLG Data; Hydrography/Transportation
    1991-1993. Vector data representing transportation and water features from USGS 1:100,000-scale topo maps. Includes contiguous 48 states and Hawaii. Various years. 14 CD-ROMs.

  • ArcWorld 1:3M Continental Coverage
    1992. Worldwide GIS base layers of the world at 1:3 million scale. Includes social statistics as well as basic geographic information such as roads, borders, cities, rivers, and index overlays for more detailed data sets. Can be opened in ArcView 3.3 in the ACIC.

  • Digital Chart of the World 1993
    1993. The Digital Chart of the World (DCW) is a comprehensive 1:1,000,000-scale vector basemap of the world. It consists of geographic, attribute, and textual data that can be accessed, queried, displayed, and modified with ARC/INFO software. Data can be used in ArcGIS. 4 CD-ROMs.

  • ESRI ArcScene: USA Tour
    1992. Landsat satellite imagery of prominent landmarks in the United States.
  • ESRI ArcUSA
    1992. Thematic data of the United States in ArcInfo coverage format at the state and county levels. This 2-CD set includes data at two scales: 1:2 million and 1:25 million.
  • ESRI Data & Maps Authentication Required
    1999 and later. Worldwide and US geodata including cities, boundaries, landforms, satellite imagery, environmental data, census, demographics, transportation, zip codes, and other information, available for educational use by University staff and students.
  • Geography Awareness Week 1998
    Western Hemisphere data including population, elevation, rivers, earthquakes, etc. from ESRI and National Geographic.
  • GeoLytics Census, Demographic, and Business Mapping and Data for the United States
    Software created by GeoLytics that enables the creation of maps and reports revealing detailed present and historic demographic, economic, and housing data from the US Census Bureau. Additional products in this collection provide mapping and reporting of streets, crime, and consumer expenditure data. Most GeoLytics software allows cartographic data to be exported as shapefiles (.shp) and as MapInfo files (.mif) for use in GIS. Individual products cover specific time periods, but together this GeoLytics collection includes data for 1970 to 2007. Multiple software packages are installed separately on two computers in the ACIC. Follow the link to the MNCAT catalog below for information about individual products.
  • Global Relief Data
    1993-1994. Elevation relief data at global and local higher resolution from the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC). Also contains global images, geographic data, coastlines, geodynamic features, gazetteers of undersea features, and satellite marine gravity data. CD-ROM with update CD.

  • MapInfo Sample Data
    1994. Sample raster and vector data for various countries in MapInfo format.
  • USGS Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles
    Digital, rectified, georeferenced aerial photos of various states outside Minnesota. Spatial coverage and precise date within a given state may vary. Each CD contains orthophotos of a single county. Check catalog record link for availability. (See Minnesota Resources above for USGS DOQQs of Minnesota.)
  • USGS Digital Raster Graphic Data
    Scanned, georeferenced topographic maps from various US states and regions at various scales. Mainly focused on Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas, but includes at least partial coverage of many other states. Check catalog record link for availability.
  • Vector Map 0
    Vector map level 0 (VMAP0) is an updated (1997) version of NIMA's Digital Chart of the World and provides worldwide coverage of vector base and thematic geospatial data at 1:1,000,000 on 4 CD-ROMS. Primary source for the database is the Operational Navigation Charts series co-produced by the military mapping authorities of Australia, Canada, the U.K., and the U.S.

Electronic Atlases
General or special-purpose atlas programs and data sets.
  • Mindscape US Atlas & Almanac
    1995. State reference maps display cities, highways, and bodies of water. Statistical maps highlight key data topics. Topographical maps show elevation, mountain ranges, deserts and other regional features. City information includes population, unemployment rate, income per capita, and annual precipitation.

Thematic and Topographic Maps
This section includes scanned topographic maps and thematic mapping software (for maps focusing on a specific geographic, political, social, or other topic).
  • DeLorme 3-D TopoQuads
    2002, 1999. Digital topographic maps of selected states. Allows 3D viewing, elevation cross sections and profiles, and search features. Available states are Minnesota, Iowa, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin (CD for northwest section unavailable), California, Hawaii, and Utah. Multiple CDs per state.
  • Delorme Topo USA
    1998 and 2002. Digital topographic maps of the entire US. Includes 3D viewing program. Multiple discs. (Map Library's copy of 2002 product lacks Disc 4, Great Lakes & Plains.)
  • GeoLytics Census, Demographic, and Business Mapping and Data for the United States
    Software created by GeoLytics that enables the creation of maps and reports revealing detailed present and historic demographic, economic, and housing data from the US Census Bureau. Additional products in this collection provide mapping and reporting of streets, crime, and consumer expenditure data. Most GeoLytics software allows cartographic data to be exported as shapefiles (.shp) and as MapInfo files (.mif) for use in GIS. Individual products cover specific time periods, but together this GeoLytics collection includes data for 1970 to 2007.     Digital USGS topographic raster maps of the entire US (Washington and Oregon are dated 2001). Includes a 3D viewing program and 3D glasses.
  • Social Explorer Authentication Required
    Created by Queens College, City University of New York, and partnering with the University of Minnesota's own National Historical Geographic Information System, this subscription edition of Social Explorer offers the ability to create customized maps and reports of demographic, housing, and employment patterns throughout the United States using data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
  • The Definitive Alaska
    National Geographic "Trails Illustrated" Trailsmart and Destination CD sets. Includes "Alaska's Rim of Fire and Ice," National Park maps for Alaska, "Alaska's Inside Passage," and "Denali National Park."

    Bundesrepublik Deutschland; Amtliche Topographische Karten. 2002. Governmental topographic maps of Germany at a scale of 1:200,000. Includes 3D glasses. German language only.

  • Historical atlas of the Holocaust CD-ROM
    1996. This CD presents 275 maps and several photographs produced for the Wexner Learning Center of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Each map is accompanied by detailed background and historical information.
