The premiere index for the zoological sciences, this is a comprehensive index to the world's zoological literature from approximately 6000 journals. It covers all animal taxa from protozoa to the primates, and all aspects of their life cycles, behaviors, taxonomy, ecology and evolution.

The online version includes information not available in the printed index, such as taxonomic summaries of each animal discussed in an article, geographical headings and additional subject approaches. Basic truncation symbol is the asterisk: *.

Printed index, 1864 - 2009 available at UMN Libraries, not updated
  • MNCAT: for finding journals, books, and more

    • EcoPort: The Consilience Engine: Ecology Without Boundaries
-- Operates under the auspices of the Univ. of Florida, The UN Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Promotes sustainable management of natural resources; includes photos and basic information on plants and crop pests.
    • Species 2000
-- Species 2000 has the objective of enumerating all known species of organisms on Earth (animals, plants, fungi and microbes) as the baseline dataset for studies of global biodiversity.
    • World Biodiversity Database
-- A continuously growing taxonomic database and information system that aims at documenting all presently known species (about 1.7 million) and to make this important biological information worldwide accessible. The WBD contains taxonomic information (hierarchies), species names, synonyms, descriptions, illustrations and literature references when available. A direct link to CMBI provides genetic information on protein sequence (from the SWISS-PROT and TrEMBL databases), nucleic sequence (EMBL) and 3D structures (PDB) for each taxon.
Government Resources
  • Government Publications Library Web Site
We are a depository for publications from the governments of the United States, Minnesota and Canada and for the international intergovernmental organizations, the United Nations and the European Union. We link to online government publications, directories, specialized databases and guides to using government publications.
