Graduate students are often deeply engaged with issues surrounding access to published research - both as readers and teachers of the work of others, and as authors, editors, and reviewers in their own right. Many of the action steps outlined on this site are equally available to graduate students as to more experienced academics, but some individual graduate students may feel limited in their ability to effect change to publishing practices and related academic customs. Many graduate students have, therefore, become involved in collective action on these topics.

One of the best places to start learning about student collective action about academic publishing is the Right to Research Coalition supports these students. It hosts a web page with information about national and international students demands for the right to access to research, including timely updates on current developments.

Student efforts at the University of Minnesota

At the University of Minnesota graduate students are also aware of problems presented by lack of access to essential research. Several open access academic journals are edited at the University of Minnesota, and University students participate in their publication, either as assistant to faculty editors, or as members of the editorial board of student publications.
