Library Carrel Application for University of Minnesota Faculty

The Libraries have two locations with carrels, Wilson Library (West Bank) and Magrath Library (St. Paul Campus). Magrath Library has a limited number of carrels (nine) for faculty and graduate students. Carrels are intended to provide study space for projects/research work, for which library material is needed. Carrels are not intended to serve as offices, conference rooms, storage space or offices for teaching/research assistants.

Effective Dates of Leave
Applicants must complete an application at the beginning of each academic year, specifying the reasons for the need for a carrel and, for current holders, indicating the published research that has been facilitated by the use of the carrel.

If this is a group application, list the names of the other members of the group and instruct them to send individual applications. (Note: 2 person limit in Magrath Library due to the room size.) Please include name, rank, campus address, department and campus phone number for each applicant.

Faculty Carrel Assignment Guidelines

The Senate Library Committee set the following principles for the assignment of faculty carrels in Wilson Library, effective Fall 1985:

  1. All carrels will be reassigned annually. Current holders may reapply and may request continued assignment of the same carrel. Applicants should complete a form at the beginning of each academic year, specifying the reasons for the need for a carrel, and for current holders, indicating the published research that has been facilitated by the use of the carrel.
  2. Carrels will be shared among two or three persons, it being understood that users would arrange their schedules so as to use the carrels at different times. The Libraries will assume no responsibility for adjudicating schedules or other conflicts among the co-holders of a single carrel.
  3. Random selection will determine which carrels will be shared, with two qualifications: a) persons on leave, carrying on full-time research, will not be required to share their carrels.
  4. Applicants may apply as a group to share a common carrel.

Carrel Use Agreement

  • Do not leave valuables in the carrel. It is not a secured area. The Libraries are not responsible for lost or stolen materials.
  • All library materials kept in a study carrel must be checked out to the carrel user. Materials that have not been properly checked out are, for all practical purposes, “lost.” If such materials are identified in a carrel, it will be grounds for review and potential withdrawal of the carrel assignment.
  • Radios or other audio devices with speaker output are not permitted in the carrels.
  • In deference to colleagues, conversation in carrels should be held to a minimum.
  • No food may be prepared in carrels. Drinks in spill-proof containers are permitted. The Libraries’ Food and Drink Policy applies to carrels.
  • Marring of walls or doors with nails, tape or other hanging devices is not permitted. Individual will be charged for damage to the carrel.
  • Smoking in carrels is not permitted.
  • Carrels are assigned for assignee use only and are not transferable to an unassigned user.
  • Lost or unreturned carrel keys will result in a $75 charge for rekeying the carrel. Lost keys should be reported to the library unit where the key was assigned. The charge is not refundable if the lost key is later returned.
