Workshops at Magrath Library

Data management plans are growing in importance across all disciplines with federal funding agencies such as NSF, NIH, and NEH now requiring these materials for some applications. This workshop will provide an overview of the questions to consider when creating a data management plan with a focus on data preservation issues and tools for sharing your data, like the University's digital repository, the University Digital Conservancy. This workshop is discussion-based and we work through each of the data management topics via group and paired activities.Primarily intended for faculty, researchers and graduate students engaged in the scholarly writing and publishing process.

Focus on your research instead of your formatting! Learn how to use Microsoft Word features effectively and efficiently to insert images and charts, get page numbers in the right place, generate tables of contents and figures; and more. This workshop covers the basic formatting you'll need to comply with Graduate School guidelines and uses Office 2007. We will be using a template and not be working with individual dissertations. Class materials can be found on the Moodle page and this class is also available online.

How can we ensure that the data we create for our research will still be usable next year, and also in 10 or 20 years? In this workshop we will discuss strategies for minimizing the long- & short-term risks to your data, identify options for data publication & archiving, and suggest how data management resources available to you at the UMN can help you comply with emerging data management policies from funding agencies.

Zotero is a research tool that collects all your research in a single, searchable interface. You can add PDFs, images, audio and video files, snapshots of web pages, and more. Zotero automatically indexes the full-text content of your library, enabling you to find exactly what you're looking for with just a few keystrokes. You can also use Zotero to easily create citations and bibliographies in a variety of different styles. This class is also available online and has Handouts in Moodle.
