Article Databases and Indexes

Academic or Scholarly Articles Subject Indexes

CINAHL, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health, has a multidisciplinary scope covering nursing, 17 allied health disciplines, biomedicine, consumer health, health sciences librarianship and selected standards of professional practice.

Search MEDLINE databases for journal articles in the health sciences. MEDLINE is the National Library of Medicine's bibliographic database/article index that contains over 17 million references to journal articles. Coverage is from 1949 to the present. Over 5200 journals worldwide in over 37 languages are indexed.


General Indexes to Magazine, Journal & Newspaper Articles

The world's largest academic multi-disciplinary database. Includes full text access to over 4,000 scholarly (peer-reviewed) publications back to 1975. A great place to start your research on any topic. Find search tips on their help page.

LexisNexis Academic is a full text databases of business, legal, news, magazines, and wire services. Legal publications include law journals, federal and state statutes, codes, cases, agency rules & regulations, patents and legal reference materials.


Indexes, Other

Online collection of toxicology-related databases including HSDB (Hazardous Substances Data Bank), IRIS (Integrated Risk Information System), TOXLINE, and several others. All databases can be searched at once.


General Reference Sources

Directories

A directory of products used in medical laboratories. Includes products used in clinical testing and analysis and laboratory services and equipment. Also includes clinical and professional reference guides


Encyclopedias

Concise as well as scholarly articles on a wide range of subjects. Also includes links to related Internet resources, and the Britannica Book of the Year. Search tip: When combining words in search, capitalize AND. For example: revolution AND 1848


Handbooks and Manuals

Reflects new knowledge in the diagnosis and management of a wide variety of human conditions. The guide includes several diagnostic algorithms and each entry is comprised of a brief methodological description together with an in-depth, but concise, discussion of clinical significance and test utilization.

FDA's Bacteriological Analytical Manual (BAM) presents the agency's preferred laboratory procedures for microbiological analyses of foods and cosmetics.

Pt. 1. Diseases, conditions,and symptoms -- Pt. 2. Laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures.

The Guidebook contains current protocols for analytical tests required by FSIS regulatory activities on meat, poultry and egg products. Specifically, microbiological methods are presented for sample preparation, isolation and identification of the major foodborne pathogenic microorganisms and their toxins, meat tissue species identification, and the detection of extraneous materials and antimicrobial residues. Media and reagent formulations, and Most Probable Number Tables are contained in an appendix.

Mosby's Diagnostic and Laboratory Test Reference is a comprehensive and current handbook that offers all health care providers easy access to clinically relevant laboratory and diagnostic tests. Each test, listed in alphabetical order for convenient use, begins on a new page and includes, when relevant, the following information: type of test, normal findings, possible critical values, test explanation and related physiology, contraindications, potential complications, interfering factors, procedure and patient care (before, during, and after), home care considerations, and abnormal findings.

An online periodical table of the elements, which provides extensive chemical, crystallographic, physical, electronic, nuclear, biological, and geological data.
