General Indexes to Magazine, Journal & Newspaper Articles

An online resource of news from around the world, obtained from newspaper articles, television and radio broadcasts, online sources, conference proceedings, periodicals, and non-classified reports. NOTE: This resource has been discontinued and is now an archive of world news between 1995 and 2013.

Indexes, Other

BOPCRIS currently contains 18,279 citations to key British Official Publications 1688-1800 and 1833-1983. Users can search by time period and/or subject area. Once a citation is found the user should check MNCAT to be sure that we own the publication cited.

Contains indexing to documents from the 1989/90 papers to date. Includes citations to the House of Commons sessional papers, the House of Lords sessional papers, and Hansard's debates. Indexing to the Journal of the House of Commons will be added to this compilation at a later date.

Indexes of British parliamentary papers

The Sessional Index forms the main source for the CD-ROM. The Index of Names is a comprehensive listing of the names of all persons referred to in the bound set.

Polling the Nations is an online database of public opinion polls containing the full text of 500,000+ questions and responses, from 14,000+ surveys, conducted from 1986 through the present in the United States and more than 100 other countries around the world.

The Background Notes are updated and/or revised as they are received from the Department's regional bureaus and are added to the database of this Department of State website.

Paper copies of earlier editions are available in the Government Publications Library in Wilson.

This interactive database from the United Nations provides the flag, latitude & longitude, total area, total population, population density, capital city, languages, largest city (and its population),currency, UN membership date, GDP, GDP per capita, and contact info for the Mission in New York and Geneva for a single country at a time.

The Library of Congress Country Studies Series presents a description and analysis of the historical setting and the social, economic, political, and national security systems and institutions of countries throughout the world. The series examines the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors.

Published annually, this brief guide profiles the economy, government, land, demographics, communications, and national defense establishments of 191 nations and other political entities. Prior years may be accessed via Countries of the World. Tables of data items in each country's profile can be viewed from the Notes and Definitions link. Click on the term being defined and a table for all countries will appear.

Statistical Resources

Microfiche collection of publications of national governments (or closest equivalent) that contain yearly summary data for the country as a whole. Also includes coverage for non-sovereign territories when parent countries treat them as separate entities. Publications in English language version are provided when available; others in multiple languages but separately published English translations of Tables of Contents or tabular headings are included when available. Allows you to view and compare the most up-to-date statistical data for up to 5 member states of the United Nations.

The International Data Base (IDB) is a source of demographic and socio-economic statistics for 227 countries and areas of the world. The IDB combines data from individual countries with U.S. Census Bureau estimates and projections to provide information from 1950 to 2050.

This database provides international statistics on all major social and economic subjects. It replaces the older database "UN Common Database" which will be discontinued in mid-2008.

WDI (World Development Indicators) Online contains statistics for over 550 indicators from 1960 for over 200 countries and 18 country groups. Subjects include: social welfare, economies, natural resources, and the environment. Data may not be available for all years for all countries.
