Article Databases and Indexes

* Premier Resources *

Search both Inspec and Compendex for articles and conference papers related to engineering, computer science, and physics.

Covers the world literature pertaining to technological and engineering aspects of air and water quality, environmental safety, and energy production. Sources include more than 500 primary journals and over 2,500 additional sources, including monographs and conference proceedings. This database is one component of the Environmental Sciences & Pollution Management (ESPM) database. To identify a additional results with a broader scope, consider conducting your search in ESPM.

An abstract and citation database with a single search platform searching content from ScienceDirect, Scopus, SciTopics, and relevant Web content.

Search within a comprehensive interdisciplinary collection of journal article citations. Subjects generally covered are within Science and technology, arts and humanities, and social sciences . Use the citation web to find articles and journals with the most impact. Coverage runs from 1975 to the present. Find help on their website.

Academic or Scholarly Articles Subject Indexes

This database includes the renowned AGRICOLA, ESPM, and EIS databases and provides full-text titles from around the world, including scholarly journals, trade and industry journals, magazines, technical reports, conference proceedings, government publications, and more. For those researchers who need to conduct comprehensive literature reviews, this database includes specialized, editorial-controlled A&I resources for discovery of relevant scholarly research and technical literature critical to the discipline.

Remote access available for University of Minnesota -- Twin Cities students, staff and faculty

ASTIS is a bibliographic database of over 59,000 records describing publications and research projects about northern Canada. The database, maintained by the Arctic Institute of North America at the University of Calgary, includes all subjects in the sciences, humanities and social sciences relevant to this part of the world. The database covers the period of 1978 to the present and includes both peer-reviewed and gray literature, government agency reports, industry reports and documents from First Nations and universities. Also includes are research project descriptions based on the licences that all northern field researchers must obtain, journal articles, conference papers, theses and books. Areas of specialization range from traditional knowledge of native peoples to earth sciences to oil and gas technology to languages and literature.

Provides news and analysis of developments in environmental, energy, and natural resources policy. The E & E Package consists of five daily publications: ClimateWire, EnergyWire, Environment & Energy Daily, GreenWire, and E & E News PM. Also includes E&ETV (featuring video interviews). The Reports tab retrieves compiled news and special reports on specific issues, events, and areas of the world. The former weekly publication, Land Letter (natural resources policy), is available via the site search feature.

Index to the worldwide literature of geology, geophysics, geochemistry, paleontology, hydrogeology , hydrology, and mineralogy. Publication types covered include journal articles, books, conference proceedings, government publications, theses, reports, and maps. Provides citations, with a small percentage accompanied by abstracts. Produced by the American Geological Institute.

Combines information on scientific research and government policies in a single resource. Topics are extensively covered from the standpoints of atmosphere, emissions, mathematical models, effects on people and animals, and environmental action in response to global pollution issues. Includes material from conference proceedings and hard-to-find documents, along with information from primary journals in the field. This database is one component of the "Environmental Sciences & Pollution Management (ESPM)" database. To identify additional results with a broader scope, consider conducting your search in ESPM.

SciFinder is the best database for chemistry-related topics. Registration is required, and you must download VPN and then log in to it for off-campus access.

SciFinder includes journal and patent references, chemical regulatory data, and supplier, reaction, and substance information.

Handbooks and Manuals

A collection of electronic books on various environmental science and environmental engineering topics.

Knovel provides online access to reference books, databases, and conference proceedings from a number of publishers that cover all areas of engineering and includes content relevant to related sciences (e.g., chemistry and earth sciences). It includes interactive graphs and tables and is a good starting point when you need a piece of data quickly.

Technical Reports

IEEE Smart Grid Research is published by the IEEE Standards Division but the documents are not standards. IEEE Smart Grid Research materials cover projections of where the smart grid will evolve to, technology challenges and opportunities, and areas where additional research is needed.

Browse and view over 7000 hardcopy EPA publications and more than 35,000 digital titles.

Bibliography Software

Citation managers are software packages used to create personalized databases of citation information and notes. They allow you to: import and organize citation information from article indexes and other sources save links to pdfs and other documents, and in some cases save the document itself format citations for your papers and bibliographies using APA and many other styles include your own notes
