The Breakerspace provides ready access to 3D printers for UMN students and affiliates. Students are given a free quota of PLA filament each semester. Filament is available in two sizes, 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm and in a variety of colors (which will vary based on availability, speak with a volunteer to find out what is in stock). Due to ventilation issues with other filaments, we do not currently support other 3D printing materials.

To submit a 3D print job, you should:

  1. Bring your .stl file (or URL) to the Breakerspace
  2. Although you are not required to be present while the object prints, you will need to be present to initiate the print
  3. A student volunteer will review the file with you to confirm that:
    • The object will fit on the print bed
    • The object is oriented on the bed correctly
    • Length of print time (print jobs that extend past regular library hours should be approved ahead of time, please contact Team Breaker)
  4. Once the object is completed, it will be removed from the print bed and put aside for you to pick up. After 24 hours any object that is not picked up will be considered abandoned
  5. If you brought your own filament, it will be kept aside for you for a period of 24 hours. After that time the filament will be considered a donation
  6. Printing an original design? Ask the student volunteer to upload your file to our Thingiverse account and show off your work

The Breakerspace is currently equipped with an Ultimaker 2 Extended and a MonoPrice Select Mini v2 to help meet the 3D printing needs of UMN students (Learn more: 3D Printing and Design).

Ultimaker 2 Extended

With a large build volume of 223 x 223 x 305 mm, layer resolution of 600 to 20 microns and a build speed of up to 24 mm³/s, the Ultimaker 2 Extended is still a reliable machine even though it is a three year old model.

MonoPrice Select Mini v2

At less than a tenth the cost of the Ultimaker, the MonoPrice Select Mini v2 is a testament to the evolution of 3D printing hardware. Although small with a build volume of 120 x 120 x 120 mm, this model is still capable of building high quality print jobs.
