Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, visiting Wilson Library is different. Read the detailed information about changes to reduce the risk of COVID-19.

Wilson Library houses the University Libraries' periodical collection in the areas of arts and humanities, psychology, education, business, and social sciences.  There are also vast newspaper and microfilm/microfiche collections. These collections are available for use whenever the building is open. Periodicals are located on the 3rd and 4th floors, and newspapers and microfilm are located in the basement.

Current Periodicals

The current issues section of the periodical room contains recent, unbound copies of the journals and magazines received at Wilson Library, filed alphabetically. These materials may not be checked out.

Bound Periodicals

The bound periodicals section consists of consolidated back issues for most of Wilson Library's scholarly journals and also for many of the magazines, shelved alphabetically. Bound volumes may be checked out for one week, and can often include one or more years of the periodical in one consolidated volume.

Many periodicals are also available online. Search the Article Indexes for online resources.

Newspaper Collection

Wilson Library's newspaper collection is housed in its own room in the basement. The collection includes major papers from the US, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. The collection also contains a few English-language papers from Asia. All other Asian papers are held in the East Asian Library or Ames Library of South Asia. The newspaper collection also contains microfilmed back issues of many newspapers from Europe and the United States.

Machines to scan, print and email from microfilm are located in the newspaper collection room.

Additional information on newspaper sources and holdings can be found through the following links:

Microfilm Collection

The Wilson Library microfilm collection includes a large amount of magazine back issues and a number of large archived collections. Microfilm is shelved numerically according to a 3-4 digit number referenced in the library catalog. Equipment for reading microfilm is located near the collection in the periodical room.

Microfiche Collection

The microfiche collection is housed in large cabinets on the outside of the newspaper room on the east side of the periodical room. Equipment for reading microfiche is located in both the newspaper room and the darkened area behind the microfilm collection.

For information on ERIC microfiche (held in Wilson Government Publications Library), see ERIC guide.

Reference microfilm and microfiche can also be found in the basement. For information regarding these collections, please visit the Reference Desk.

Microfilm and microfiche may be copied on self-service microfilm/microfiche copiers located in Wilson Periodicals. Guides explaining how to use many individual microfilm or microfiche collections are available from the Wilson Information, Reference and Instruction Service.
