Zotero is a standalone software program that works with Firefox, Chrome and Safari. It allows users to:

  • Create a databases of citations by easily selecting items from your browser
  • Attach and organize your PDFs
  • Sync your database to the Web
  • Share group libraries with others
  • Create bibliographies in a variety of styles

Register for a Zotero Workshop Zotero Basics is a 60-minute session that covers the fundamentals of using Zotero, including adding references, exporting them to Word, and selecting styles (e.g., MLA, APA, etc.) to generate customized bibliographies.

Zotero Mobile

Zotero has not developed a mobile version of it's software.  You can download the Zotero Bookmarklet to save and send pdfs directly to your Zotero account.

Google Docs integration

Zotero has added the ability to use the citation manager with Google Docs. The Google Docs integration is installed when you add the Zotero connector for Firefox or Google Chrome.

Useful Zotero plugins

Zotero is open source software.  Many individuals have developed plugins to add to the capabilities of Zotero.  Some of the most useful plugins are noted below.

Barcode scanner uses an iPhone or iPad running iOS 12 to scan scan a book’s barcode and adds it to your Zotero database.

Zotfile is a Zotero plugin that syncs PDFs from your Zotero library with your mobile PDF reader app, it also batch renames files and extracts annotations to Zotero notes.

Zotpress is a WordPress plugin that displays Zotero citations in a variety of ways on WordPress.
